Several years ago I scrounged together our fire p[it.  It has become the focal point to or shaded courtyard area and we use it for cooking for evening fires or to just sit there enjoying the bird song.  Here is the pictures and story.

Our back yard fire pit Empty Red Neck

Post  MrBooker 4/30/2016, 10:58 am

I'm going to try and "out redneck ya" on this one Cappy. If you look beyond the 4 bbq grills you can see what I call my "Red Neck Deck".  I took six 4x4 hardwood pallets, laid them on the ground and nailed decking lumber on top of them. DONE. No measuring, leveling or painting.

You can also see my little fire pit on the deck. Look to the right in the pic and you'll see what I call my "Shed house". That's where I keep all of my good junk.

My lovely bride, of 52 years, and I like to go out in early mornings and late evenings and build a fire,   Our back yard fire pit 3170584802 and look over the raised beds.   AHHhhh... life is good.

I love the innovative "redneck" things that people come up with.

Please ... I want some more!  Bring 'em on. Maybe they deserve another thread under Senseless Banter rather than hijacking this thread.

We were just talking about building a deck over our crappy front cement porch earlier today.

CC ... last year I thought about doing the deck over the crappy concrete porch thing. In the end I hired a neighbour who builds decks to come in and rip out the old concrete, put in concrete pillars below the frost line (using sonotubes) and build a deck and front steps. The porch/deck is a couple of feet above the surrounding land. The thing is built like a battleship.  That was last Fall.  Today he is back to redo the interlock paving from the driveway to the front step/porch. At the same time I am at the back of the house building a sifter screen for my compost. But Mrs TD will be using it first to separate soil, weeds, plants from her perennial gardens.

Yes sir, it is.  I love my red neck deck. As I said, its just hardwood pallets laid on the ground with decking boards screwed down. The pallets were free and the decking lumber was about $150.00.
     Now THATS a cheap deck...

Hi FeedMeSeeMore!  How are you??
Only about 30% of our hardwood pallets were heat treated.  Those were specifically used to transport goods overseas as required by most laws of most countries.  Heat treating the pallets only kills any bugs/larvae that is inside the wood.  Heat treating helps keep certain types of bugs from being transferred from one place to the next.  For instance, If you are shipping overseas, most countries require that you heat treat the pallets to keep from introducing different bugs into different countries.  They also require that all the bark be removed before heat treating to help control the spread of the bugs.  Some times, certain areas of the US have heavy infestations of serious bugs and heat treating is required if pallets are used to ship goods out of the infested area.

Heat treating pallets is not the same as kiln drying the wood.  It's only purpose is to kill bugs nesting inside the wood.  The heat used in this instance is not as high a heat and is not treated for as long a period as kiln drying.  Big difference.  It does not do anything to help or hurt the pallet except kill bugs.
