Replanting Potato Beds Empty Replanting Potato Beds

Post  donnainzone5 Sat Apr 23, 2016 2:42 pm

Well, I'm belatedly preparing to plant this season's potato beds.

Question:  What's the best way to add compost to refresh the Mel's Mix?  Empty the boxes, then add a couple of inches of compost, plant, then re-fill?  Stir in the compost?  Or what?  I have lots of leaf mold and pine needles....  As well as many different composts to blend.

Replanting Potato Beds Empty Re: Replanting Potato Beds

When I planted three squares of potatoes this year I first added compost to the top of the squares, then shoveled out the three squares into 2 buckets at which point the compost was automatically mixed in with the Mel's mix.  I placed the potatoes into the ditch, then covered with MM from the bucket.  They all sprouted, faster than expected, and look extremely healthy. Once they are up 6 inches or so I'll cover again with the MM from the bucket, and so on. Last year, as they grew, I ran out of MM and started using pine needles and unfinished compost to cover. It worked fine and I'll do that again this year if need be.
