Northern & Central Midwest: December Dreaming!
Hi, all! I don't know about you, but winter has slowly crept in here in Ohio, despite a warm fall. I have turned my attention to trying to get more out of my compost efforts, and planning for seed starting activities! No catalogs yet at my house.
Got a squirrel baffle for the shepherd's hook that I put my birdfeeder and suet holder on, hope it helps! My neighborhood squirrels spill so much sunflower seeds out of the feeder, it is so wasteful. I even feed them separately, corn on the cob and when it is bitter, they get unsalted peanuts!
Going to get the feeders happening today after it warms up a bit.

Waiting on mine too...... For those of you already getting them - don't keep us in suspense! What are you looking at getting???
Re: Northern & Central Midwest: December Dreaming!
Tom Thumb Peas (shell). They do not get very tall. Can be grown in pots. I intend to start them inside in pots in Jan/Feb and maybe plant out in Feb. Because they are so small, I can keep them covered with plastic and row cover.

This will be my first trial of that variety. I intend to grow it as an English Shell Pea.Scorpio Rising wrote:yolos wrote:Tom Thumb Peas (shell). They do not get very tall. Can be grown in pots. Re: Northern & Central Midwest: December Dreaming!
Freezing fog here as well, but the last few days have been in the 40's and NOT freezing overnight. Not a typical December. When I checked last weekend there were a few garlic sprouts poking up! Then we had a snow storm, then the 40's, and now that some of that snow has melted I am going to check and see if there are MORE garlic sprouts. I tried checking last night, but it was after dark and I did not have my slug flashlight with me!

I am there with you! It is currently 36F. It is December and we have had at least 3 nights that temps stayed ABOVE freezing! Our high today is supposed to be 51F! If I had only known, I could have put in a few hundred carrots!!!Scorpio Rising wrote:Getting a little weirded out by the weather. Really warm. Would squirrels be digging up my garlic? Most of it is up, but some is missing for sure from the grid pattern....

Squirrels will dig up ANYTHING - even if they have done it before. Dig it up, take one bite out of it, decide they don't like it, *you plant it back in the ground, they dig it up the next day and take one more bite, spit it out*, repeat from* to * infinite number of times....the life cycle of my irises.

I haven't been up here much, but this weather is weird! I have buds on my ornamental pear trees, the garlic has grown up through the first bag of mulch i dumped on top of it, and we just had our first snow flakes on Friday.

GG, it was just so strange, because this garlic is literally in a big fake terra cotta container that I got at KMart last month...I was surprised that the little buggers knew it was here!
And yes, herblover, very strange weather. El Nino and other (global warming yes) things going on.....we have had no snow at all, just flurries....but nothing accumulation wise. Which is OK for me because I drive a half hour to work. Yay!
Very weirdly warm.....

Re: Northern & Central Midwest: December Dreaming!
Rained yesterday and overnight here, over an inch at present. I have my Christmas bale of straw coming today, so I will have to get out and layer/bulk up my pile. I think I am going to combine them into one big pile and go for broke. My friends are bringing (2) 5 gallon buckets of cow poo too, which I will add in there, along with my new-found coffee grounds from the coffee house! Then I am going to tarp it, because we are in for some seasonably cold weather coming, according to Wunderground.
