Mid-South: October 2015
October? Already???? Sigh..... Can't believe it's already October.
There's still items we can plant in our gardens! Gardenate.com gives the following for Zone 7B:
You'll notice that all of them are direct sowing....
The Old Farmer's Almanac gives these chores for October:
So there's lots to do, Mid-Southers! Have fun!
There's still items we can plant in our gardens! Gardenate.com gives the following for Zone 7B:
Beans - broad beans, fava beans (also Fava bean) | Plant in garden. |
Chives (also Garden chives) | Plant in garden. |
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) | Plant in garden. |
Garlic | Plant in garden. |
Jerusalem Artichokes (also Sunchoke) | Plant in garden. |
Kohlrabi | Plant in garden. |
Onion | Plant in garden. |
Radish | Plant in garden. |
Rutabaga (also Swedes) | Plant in garden. |
Shallots (also Eschalots) | Plant in garden. |
Spinach (also English spinach) | Plant in garden. |
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) | Plant in garden. |
The Old Farmer's Almanac gives these chores for October:
- Plant seeds or transplants of cool-season vegetables, such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, onions, spinach, and turnips.
- Plant herbs this month. Try dill, oregano, sage, and fennel.
- Set strawberry plants this month in a garden bed or container. Water well.
- Try planting daffodils. Find varieties that fit your region.
- Plant cool-weather annuals such as foxglove, petunia, and Shasta daisy.
- If you have any tropical or subtropical container plants, move them indoors when the temperature drops to the 40s.
- Divide and replant crowded perennials.
- If you are planning on planting wildflower seeds, prepare the soil now. Till the soil thoroughly to a depth of 4 to 5 inches. Prepare a seed mixture of many different kinds.
- Continue planting any trees and shrubs. They will have time to establish themselves before the spring.
- Apply a layer of mulch around your newly planted shrubs and trees.
- Continue mowing and watering your lawn until it stops growing. Avoid fertilizing the lawn, as this could encourage tender growth that might be damaged during the winter.
- Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn to control winter weeds. Apply when nighttime temperatures are 55 to 60 degrees for 4 to 5 days.
- If your lawn is losing color, try overseeding with annual ryegrass when temperatures are in the low 70s.
- Clean up your flower beds after the first killing frost; remove any dead plants.
So there's lots to do, Mid-Southers! Have fun!
Re: Mid-South: October 2015
Like you, Marie, I would like to print a list of things to plant in our Canadian Region but it covers such a huge are that I would advise any Canadian gardener to find the US region just below where they live in Canada and allow for a few differences in temperature etc.
I think in British Columbia Southern Interior, I can use Western Mountains and Plains.

KJ, I posted a couple of hardiness maps under your Canadian Region Oct-Dec.
Re: Mid-South: October 2015
Have had some beautiful weather the last few days. And I FINALLY got to spend some time in the garden. I actually got a bit of a sunburn yesterday.
We had a freeze warning last night. And DH says it was 38 when he got up. But the sun was already up & hitting the temp gauge in our a/c system. So who knows...
So time to pull everything and work on putting the beds "to bed." This year I want to make sure I do that! Not be lazy like last fall & decide to wait, lol...

That is what I have planned for today, too Marie. Pull everything except chard, get flowers pulled (annuals) and compost everything. Put patio and pool stuff away. It froze here last night. I want to top the SFG with some manure for winter.

Today I am transplanting the spinach that I grew from seeds. I filled a 4 x 8 bed with the spinach and I had a lot left over. Its just been sitting on my porch. I looked at it yesterday and it all looks healthy. I am going to transplant it in the non SFG 20 foot row that had peas growing in it that were eaten by some critter.

Re: Mid-South: October 2015
Well, was able to pull some of the grass & wild strawberries & other junk that's been growing in my blank boxes all summer. (I didn't plant much this year. (See earlier comment about laziness...)
Progress... I made progress. And we burned some of the smaller branches from our poor pecan tree we're taking down.
