Ginger

We were delighted to learn that ginger produces a flower that smells like honeysuckle.

I have not done a lot with my garden lately.  I've only planted a few things in seed starters.

And it's just as well I did not direct sow anything.  It's pouring here!!!   Anyone else in my neck of woods floating?

I have never heard thunder that loud.  We got plummeted.  Poor little beets and radishes and a few other things are lying on their sides. 

I have never thought about growing ginger.  I will have to look into that.

There's a TV show on Nat Geo I think that shows crews going out to pick ginger and making excellent money doing it. Good luck on your efforts -- and consider perhaps whether they might pay!

Windmere, does that ginger winter over for you? Do you harvest the roots? How?

I brought mine in last year and thought it died. This spring I took the pot outside and left it for when I needed it, and lo and behold the ginger is growing better this year than last. No flowers yet though. Maybe if I bring it in again this winter I'll get flowers next year.

Our edible ginger has never had a chance to flower.  Even when it stays in the ground for a really long time.   I bury some ginger root from the Farmer's Market in regular soil in the garden.

Hey folks.  Sorry it took me so long to respond.

Marc:  I thought about that Nat Geo show immediately when I first planted this ginger.   I actually have watched that particular program and I like it.  However... sadly... I eventually remembered that they look for ginseng.   Nonetheless, ginger ain't real cheap in my neck of the woods (unless I go to an Asian market).  Might be worth opening a business 

CC:  My ginger did overwinter.  Evidently ginger loves warm humid weather (tropical... or in my case, southern).  I read that it does not like direct sun.  Now, despite the really cold winter we had, my ginger just hibernated (there was no evidence that it was there at all).  My wife actually had me move it twice after I first planted it.  It DID NOT like that at all.  I thought it was a gonner, but it began to sprout in spring.  The final spot where there are is surrounded by azaleas (so they are somewhat sheltered).  The soil is Mel's Mix(ish) because the natural soil around them has encroached somewhat.  It still drains well though.

Kauairosina:  I like your idea about the farmer's markets.  My ginger came from a friend who was thinning hers out.  She lives near me and it's grown well for her.  That encouraged me to try it too.
