White Flies
Beside my SFG, my wife has a lot of ornamental plants. Yesterday, as we were sitting under the fans on the patio, we observed a swarm of white flies descending like a swarm of locusts on pharaoh in Egypt. I've never seen them like this. Any suggestions? Plants are already covered in sticky sap.

Re: White Flies
For the first time ever White Flies have showed up in my cold frame. I mixed up a batch of homemade insecticidal soap and sprayed all of the plants. Since it is a closed environment, I didn't have to worry about beneficial insects being affected by the soap so I could spray heavily. Will check tomorrow to see if re-application is going to be necessary.

Re: White Flies
This year was my worst for white flies and aphids, but especially the white flies. I used spinosad, insecticidal soap and Dr. Bronner's Liquid Peppermint Soap alternately. I think the Dr. Bronner's actually did a very good job considering how inexpensive it is.

I make my own insecticidal soap instead of buying a ready to use one. It is very simple to make, very economical, and very, very effective.
1 qt warm water
2 tsp Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Pure-Castile Liquid Soap
2 tsp Vegetable Oil (I use either Olive or Coconut)
Cap tightly and shake sufficiently to emulsify the oil & soap. Pour into spray bottle to apply - shake regularly while spraying.
