I just want to add that if anyone still doesn't have Mel's book, All New Square Foot Gardening, I highly recommend it. It will offer help on many of the things being discussed here.
Mel talks about flowers in the gardens. He puts them in SFGs as companion plants and to attract pollenators and he says, "besides, they're pretty"!
Since I've always been a flower gardener, I like that. But I say I like a few veggies in my SFGs for variety, besides, they're tasty! hahaha
