Tomato, Cucumber and Pumpkin Plant Problem Empty Tomato, Cucumber and Pumpkin Plant Problem

Post  Dunkinjean 6/4/2014, 10:51 pm

Hi everyone,

Below will be various pictures of my tomato plants, cucumber plants and pumpkin plants which basically overnight developed problems as you can see on the leaves.
I am at a loss as to what happened. All of these are in the same box.
The pumpkin and cucumbers are along the trellis.
Behind them are the 3 tomato plants. I have more pics but felt this was enough.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you for your assistance.

DJ, I don't know but I will be watching this topic. You can't be the only one whose plants look like this.

My first thought (but maybe not correct) was herbicide damage because it affects different type of veggies.  Usually the same disease will not affect different types of veggies such as tomatoes and cucurbits.   But not sure here, did you recently spray weed killer anywhere in your yard.  Maybe just physiological such as over/under watering.

Your plants remind me of my dandelions after being sprayed with vinegar.

How close is your bed to your property line?  Could a neighbor have sprayed with a toxic chemical?  Was there wind yesterday?

Did you harden them off before planting?  Could it be sunburn?

Hi everyone:

Thank you for your suggestions!

I trimmed off most of the dead leaves and branches off the plants after I took the pictures.
Yes, they were already hardened off.
The interesting thing is, it rained overnight and the cucumbers and pumpkins actually look a lot better. The tomato plants look slightly better.
The box is fairly close to our above ground pool. My husband recently uncovered our above ground pool, so I asked him if he accidentally dropped the pool hose or water somehow got into the pool. The water level at that time was low since he was patching the liner. He says absolutely not! But to me pool water may have splashed onto the plants without him knowing.
Tomorrow I will check on the plants again.
Thank you everyone for your help!

Any chance they were exposed to a concentration of chlorine gas? Sometimes the chlorine smell in a pool is enough to make my eyes water.

Since the rain helped a bit it sounds like a good watering is needed to flush out any chemicals.

Good luck.  Let us know how it goes.
