I purchased two containers of Pennington Worm Castings from WalMart and noticed that there is a chemical warning on the container.  It says that it contains chemicals known in the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects.  Wow!  Does anyone know about this? I am guessing that I should NOT put these in my SFG.  I don't know about the levels, etc... but would like some input on this.  Thanks!

I googled pennington worm castings.  There is an msds sheet for it here
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&sqi=2&ved=0CCMQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.penningtonfertilizer.com%2F~%2Fmedia%2FFertilizer%2FFiles%2FPennington%2FMSDS%2520Pennington%2520Earthworm%2520Castings%2520100%2520Item%2520No100515152.ashx&ei=LXsuVdK_DoKMNq2Zg8gO&usg=AFQjCNEVtJP9-R8EtS0xOW_KpQS51Hu26w&sig2=bJUnEHVdxjxRebJw7eNkTQ&bvm=bv.90790515,d.eXY  On page
On page 2  of the msds sheet, #11, says there are no known carcinogens in the product.   Does your bag state the offending ingredients?   It may be a newer product with something suspect in it.  Then you can look it up.

As a Californian, I can tell you those warnings are just about everywhere and on just about everything - even on so many things that aren't a real threat that they've lost their effectiveness.

Research it to be sure, but don't panic.  Companies are required to put these things on their labels if there's even the tiniest substance that's even natural in it but is a known carcinogen.  Even arsenic in natural products at normal levels found in nature and not even harmful  Smile

The warning may refer to the container if it is Styrofoam, or even plastic that is not food safe. After all, these worms were destined for fish to eat.

Thank you for all of the replies.  The worm castings are in a plastic container.  It is really odd to me because on the front label it says "Adds organic matter", then under that in small letters it says "Not for use in organic crop and organic food production".  On the side of the container it says it is "great for indoor and outdoor plants, vegetables, flowers and shrubs".  The ingredients listed are Nitrogen 15% and Iron .58% and says it is derived from Vermicompost.  It is a little confusing!

I see I misread the title of the topic. I thought it was about the fishing worms in containers, not the castings. Embarassed

Not my little redworms, Sanderson, my precious redworms only go to homes
that love them and allow them to create nice, rich, dark smells earthy good
plant nutrition - albeit - yes, the comment seems to have been about castings,
or what we know as vermicompost or vermicasts. Laughing

Wow, I did not know Walmart carries worm castings.  I went to their website, but could not find Pennington variety.  There were a couple others though.  Just a note from my own personal experience:  Amazon carries a variety called Wiggle Worm that is excellent. It runs about 18 bucks for 15 pounds.  If you have a Prime membership, two day shipping is free.
