Anyone canned ground cherries?
The Ball Blue Book and Ball Home Preserving book have recipes for gooseberry jam. Has anyone used ground cherries instead?? Is it ok to use??
I called the Ball 1-800 number twice today but couldn't get through.

Guess not. But it sure sounds like a wonderful idea for jam or ice cream topping.

Re: Anyone canned ground cherries?
I was hoping to make canned ground cherry jam for the Farmer's Market booth. There are websites with recipes but you know about websites....so I called the Ball people and the person said there is not an approved and safe recipe for canned ground cherries. I asked the person to please check with those higher up. She did and yesterday I received an email confirming there is not an approved method for canned ground cherries.
Great. I removed the husks and froze over a gallon of the little stinkers. But there are other recipes for pies and other goodies so I'll forget the canning part of it.
I even checked the USDA site. Nothing. The person at Ball said to check with my extension service. I'll be over there tomorrow so I plan to ask. Don't expect anything but I'll follow through anyway..

They are also called Cape Gooseberries. Can you find anything with that name?

Re: Anyone canned ground cherries?
I went round in circles with the person at Ball re: exactly what you said. Well, when you look up the technical description cape gooseberries and ground cherries are not the same thing and the USDA has them categorized separately.
