harvesting lemon cukes

Last night I harvested a couple of lemon cukes. This are a popular heirloom with a slight lemony flavor, and about the size of a large lemon. My only complaint is that I'd like to see more. I'm grateful for the ladybugs that have shown up to help us control the aphids. Very Happy

I have them in my garden for the second year. What I enjoyed last year is the though they don't put out massive volume at one time, they continued producing for months. I had them in my greenhouse and enjoyed them well into December and maybe even January if I remember correctly.

That's good to know. I hope I can hold off the PM, aphids and moth larvae that long. Smile

Lemon cucumbers are the only ones that survived and are now producing. I will try them next year. Mild flavor, and DH also likes them better than green ones from the store.

we have been planting these for several years now.....they are my 8 yr sons favorite!....I have a hard time convincing him to let them get a bit bigger before harvesting Razz

like others have said....even though they are later then the reg-green-cucumber for first harvest, they will out produce once they get going and continue to produce after the others are done Very Happy

(at least for us) and for the last couple of years the reg-green cucumbers didn't do well for us.....(this year though they are going great)....but my point is the lemon cucumbers never let us down....they have always given us fruit Very Happy

I'm trying this variety for the first time this year. How does one know when the cukes are ready to harvest?

They start to get yellow, but not solid yellow like a lemon. You will quickly learn! Very Happy

We visited an "organic" farm and store site today. They had lemon cukes so I could have taken a photo if I had only know someone would ask about them. Darn.

yep the above pic of dstack is a great pic of when to harvest them......only if we could convince our son Razz

to let them get that big.....you can see its a lighter color with a start of a darker yellow.....if you let them go longer the whole cucumber will become dark....we like them at the lighter color with a tad bit of dark like dstack pic Very Happy

I like them because their surface is rough and has little slightly spiny dots on it, which makes other people leave them alone, which means I get to eat them all.
