I guess I had a false sense of security with a 7 foot fence around my garden. It's really only 4 feet with the upper part deer mesh. I've had a ground hog family of three living under my shed for a few years now and last year no problem.

This morning I went out and half of my carrots were missing heads and my kale was bitten to the stem. I caught a glimpse of the @#$@ as he was headed home. I must have interrupted him before he could completely wipe me out. Glad they don't seem to care for tomatoes.

I immediately went to the kitty litter box, scooped out a few clumps and tossed them into the hole that leads to their home. I'd fill it in if I knew there weren't other ways for them to get in and out. Endless ways. I also brushed the cat and spread the hair around where I think the @#$@ climbed over and got in.

I guess my question is, is a carrot still a carrot with a top?

Well, that's a good question.  Will the carrot/root grow without leaves.  I'm guessing it'll put up more leaves but at what cost to the root?  I'll be interested in seeing the answer.  If there is no answer you could always try it and let us know.

Sorry about the ground hog.  Check out the thread on Cats and maybe some of those tips will help keep out your critters.  I used cat poo once all around an in ground veggie garden,  but it was so long ago that I don't even remember the results.

The carrot will put out more foliage.

I headed over the my garden center and the person there I trust advised me what I did with the cat poo will be more effective than anything he could have sold me. I plan to get a few pinwheels as well to try and confused them. I'll let you all know how that plays out. If it doesn't work, you're sure to read by witching here  Carrots without tops ;-( 1280598131
