Tomato leaf split and a little wilty Empty Tomato leaf split and a little wilty

Post  GardenGroupie 6/18/2014, 11:31 am

So, we went from too cool to very warm in a short period. My tomato plants leaves a bit soft and the main stem seems to lost it's direction. New stems are not shooting out strong. I also noticed today and 4 out of 8 have a few split leaves in various places (edge, middle). I had some birds take off with a few strawberries in the next bed, so I'm wondering if they decided to have a little taste. Can that little taste cause disease? Pardon me if that's dumb question. There's a blue-jay hanging around my hard, sometimes perched on a post on the other side of my fence just staring in at me.  Twisted Evil   They are getting plenty of water, but I've been testing the soil before watering to make sure it's needed. The soil mixture is well aerated, so I can't imagine that the roots are not developing. It does, however, look like most of the plants have new growth that looks good and their are flowers. ..What's a girl to do?

How are you supporting your tomato plants?  Can you post a picture?  Just going from cool to hot shouldn't be bad for the toms, on the contrary: they LIKES it hot.  You said they're getting enough water, so that's not it either.

I have lots of birds patrolling my garden and they usually leave stuff alone unless there's a juicy bug to be had in between the foliage.  I don't know that a bird will peck at a leaf just 'cuz (your strawberries are a different story), especially tomato leaves; aren't they poisonous?  It's not a dumb question re: disease, but I've never heard of a bird transmitting diseases to a plant.  Maybe others can comment on this.

Thanks molllyhespra, I'll try to get pictures later today. The plants are in the standard cone cages which I hope to some day replace. They are not user-friendly. Yesterday I started using velcro ties to keep the plants from swaying towards one side of the cage. My carbon is sooooooooo slow. The best looking and smallest plant.

Tomato leaf split and a little wilty Empty Found the culprit

Post  GardenGroupie 6/18/2014, 1:43 pm

Hi, I believe I've found the culprit. I uploaded some pics to my personal gallary, but when I click on them, other pictures display...

What I did find when I looked closer was tiny little silver and brown bugs - aphids! I was having a problem with ants that I believe were harvesting them. The aphids moved to my tomato bed. I'm going to have use a garlic or soap spray to deal with them pronto!

I also found a few leaves that had some brown spots, not at the tip, just random. I took pictures and will display when I work the pic problem.
