Building sfg wicking beds in the Desmond Tutu Centre Cape Town SA
At Urban Farmers South Africa we donated our time to install 2 SFG wicking beds into the Desmond Tutu Centre where they help young people who are HIV positive. After the installation I gave a quick introduction to SFG and wicking beds to the children so that hopefully they will take the information away. Check us out on facebook @ Urban farmers South Africa lots of pictures. Would like to up loads some on here but it doesn't seem to be happening for me?
Currently we are trying to raise funds to build 50 of these units for these kids to maintain at the center so that they can take the produce home. These kids mostly live in very cramped corrugated iron shacks in the townships so have no access to land to grow and unfortunately not much fresh veg in there diets. So its exciting times for us 2 beds built so far 48 to go.

I checked out your facebook pictures. Very interesting because I have a self-wicking version of SFG myself.

What do you use to hold the water? It is not easy to find materials in Africa.

Sounds like a wonderful project, Peter. Look forward to your pictures once you're able to get them up. New posters can't post pics immediately, though.

Hi Peter. Welcome! And thank you for your work. Can't wait to see the pics.

The reservoir line is made just using builders plastic sheeting, filled with rubble to support the compost. A biddum cloth divides the the compost from the rubble but ensures the contact with the water.
