Thought I would try to post some pics of our progress so far.

This is what I call the salad bar:

Um, well I guess I cannot do it from a tablet.  Will try again from the laptop a little later.

2014 Bunny Adventure Empty Yea, I found my laptop!!

Post  nurzemjd 6/7/2014, 3:26 pm

We are in the midst of a long remodeling project and haven't been able to find my laptop for a while, I use my tablet and smart phone so much I didn't really miss it, until I tried to post my photos.  Since then been battling some health issues, so sorry it has taken so long to get back to this.

Here goes, lol!

Last year was my first real attempt at SFG, but alas I had not really completely read the book first, so many mistakes were made, but all-in-all not too bad for a beginner!

This year things are going much better  Very Happy

Last year I had my 3 raised beds (6ft x 8ft, 4ft x 6ft, and 3ft x 3ft), the strawberry pool, and upside down tomatoes, lol.  This year we have added quite a bit!  I am most proud of my new table top "Salad Bar", as I call it.  After much arguing with my husband about the construction, we finally got it done, lol!  Our neighbor gave us a shipping crate that is 3ft x 8ft.  I took out the two little boxes I put in the front of our house for flowers and brought them back to the garden area (2ft x 3ft each), we bought some resin whiskey barrel planters from Costco, and my brother was throwing out a waterbed frame, so I brought the six drawers home and used them for planters, lol.  The tomatoes and peppers this year are mostly in 4 or 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot.  Oh and I almost forgot the greenhouse!

Here are some of the pics I took:

All of those pics were taken on May 19, so a lot of growth has occurred and some harvesting done.

We have some big future plans for both front and back yard which will take years for us to complete.  Right now we are in the planning stages and will start on the back yard first.  The falling down privacy fence is currently being replaced, slowly, but hopefully done by summers end.  We are planning a permanent greenhouse where the plastic one is now and will be a bit bigger.  The area where the original boxes from last year will be a 20ft x 12ft garden area (this I am most excited about and will share my plans with you in the future, I have many questions to ask about this before it is built).

Looks like someone is having a lot of fun there!  You were smart to put plastic in the waterbed drawers. I used a kitchen drawer for lettuce a couple years ago and didn't line with plastic. It fell apart by the end of the season.

Very nice. Looks like you're going to get lots of produce in a moderate growing space.

What's that octagonal thing it looks like you're growing taters in? I haven't seen a container like that before.

Thanks guys!  It is nice to be able to get in here and read again, and I am having a lot of fun with the garden this year!!

That orange thing is taters!  I bought that special potato planter on clearance, lol, it is crap; think I stick with the trash can!!

You are so right about no container being safe, I see growing potential in just about everything now.  My husband thinks I'm nuts and trying for the trailer trash of the year award, lol, I just tell him I am out of the running because I don't have a trailer  Very Happy

It is all temporary until I get my dream garden built anyway.   rock on

Do your plans include the clothesline posts? They would be a good start to a large trellis.

funny post

That would also be a good time to put a plastic pink flamingo out in the garden!

For good luck, of course!  Wink

Wow, I see your cabbages are overgrowing the box a month ago.
In future you might try the mini-cabbages.  They fit a lot better in raised beds.
Been there, done that.
Your garden looks really good.

I am planning a trellis between the clothes line and fence for the grapes.  The new garden area will have a trellis along the full 20' length of the North side (rear).  I have the materials for the trellis we are putting on my current big box, but waiting for hubby to have a day off to help me put it up.  Need it for all my lovely squash plants Smile

Yea!  All of my tomato and pepper plants are blooming!!

Have any of you grown Brussels Sprouts? I have 2 different types planted at different times.  The first set I planted are huge (at the back of the cabbage), not seeing any little heads on those yet either.

The two oldest of my little blueberry bushes are producing fruit this season, pretty happy with that!

As someone suggested last year, I planted flowers (mostly Marigolds) in the center of the big box; where I can't quite reach, lol.

Is it too late for me to plant some spinach and lettuce seeds?  Providing I get some shading for that box, of course.

Silly me, rofl, last year when I planted beets, I got starts from somewhere .... I pulled them out of the little pony pack and planted them, couldn't figure out why they didn't grow much, oh duh, I didn't plant them separately, just six clumps!  Amazing how well they are doing this year, since they have room to grow!!

The sweet potato experiment is not so good this year, but that was my fault.  Didn't get them out of the shipping package quick enough.  We may still get a few, we'll see.

Yes, Quiltbea those cabbage plants are huge!  Not sure I want to do the reds again. I liked the 45 day greens!

OMG Boffer, pink flamingo .... perfect!!  I have a Charlie Daniels/ZZ Top gnome in the strawberry pool now, lol!

I'm taking a year off from growing BS.  They do take forever, and I'm forever fighting bugs and blowouts.  I wish I could grow one of these.

It's worth a try on the greens if you have room.  Rose and I are getting the best spinach harvests that we've had in a few years.

I'm growing brussells sprouts. Actually, I'm just growing brussells sprouts leaves. I planted them last fall and so far, just leaves. They're not bolting, not changing size, withering, anything. They look great, for all the good it does me. Razz
