This is why I grow Basil
I grow lots of Basil in my herb bed. I use basil in my cooking but the real reason I grow it is to make Basil Aioli.
Home made mayonnaise is best. If you use commercial mayonnaise use Hellman's.
1 cup mayonnaise
2 tbsps. extra virgin olive oil
1 - 2 cloves garlic
1 cup loosely packed fresh basil
zest of a small lemon
2 tbsps. lemon juice
1 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
Put all ingredients in a food processor. Pulse until basil is finely chopped and ingredients are well blended.
Taste and adjust seasoning.
Refrigerate until ready to use.
Use this Aioli as a dip for fresh vegetables, as a sandwich spread or for salad dressing.
Makes your very happy.

Re: This is why I grow Basil
Oh yum...I want basil and more basil. Started mine from seeds and it's so slow to grow...but it hasn't given up yet.
This sounds really good! Copy/pasted into my recipes file.

If you are in the South, try Dukes Mayo. It is the only mayo on the market made with no sugar and is the closest I've every found to the homemade mayo my grandmother made.Elizabeth wrote:I grow lots of Basil in my herb bed. Re: This is why I grow Basil
Do you have a recipe for your mom's home made mayo, Kay?
That recipe sounds good, Elizabeth. Copied it for next year and made a cross reference to Basil in my gardening folder. I missed sowing basil seed last season so that will remind me.
I have just checked my seed stash and I have basil seeds there so I will use my AeroGarden and get me some basil grown.
