Hello from the UK via New York!

Hello fellow SFG,
my name is Kristina and I have been gardening since I was a kid growing up in New York. As far back as I can remember my dad had a huge row garden ever summer. I remember the tons of work that he put into it but boy did we have wonderful veggies! My job as a kid was to pick the 3 rows of string beans. It's a wonder I still eat them!
So now wanting to create memories with my own children, I've looked into and begun SFG. I'm hoping I can be as successful as my dad and keep the kiddos interested. I only have two issues: 1.I've never done it before now (always had containers one or two plants) and I've been transplanted to the UK. The weather is nothing like I'm used to. Lots of rain but then a drought, sun for part of the day, wondering if there is enough heat to grow anything aside from broccoli, potatoes & carrots. All the farmers around us seem to do very well with these!
I'm a good portion of the way through Mel's updated book and we are also reading the "with kids" version as a family. We have one 3x3 and one 8x3; rough estimates as they are in meter measurements. just watching the temps to see if my sprouts in my "conservatory" aka sun room will survive!
