Dig dig dig...
I've been digging up my garden now the snow is gone! The chives are poking up. It's still a few weeks before I can plant anything, but I'm excited to get my fingers in the dirt again!

Re: Dig dig dig...
My chives are up as well, and I have just started digging and prepping this weekend. I have 5 chive clumps to move into their new permanent home in the next week or so.

Re: Dig dig dig...
My chives made it thru our GA winter on the deck railing in a windowbox. Did great, as a matter of fact. But then I found 1000's of little black bugs on them when it started to warm up. I'm guessing some sort of spider aphid since I did see webbing of sorts. Ended up tossing them in the compost pile...

Chives are hardy - they will probably grow in your compost pile!

Re: Dig dig dig...
I planted a bunch of chives last fall that a friend gave me.
Their coming up now very nicely, can I move them some where else in the garden?

Re: Dig dig dig...
my chives are about ready to flower...and they have a beautiful flower that lasts longer than one may think.
I have one bunch that I try to confine to one SFG garden square...and another small clump I keep in a black plastic nursery pot. It lives through drought and heat as well as this last super cold winter.
I just cut out a big bunch and gave some to friends this weekend.

They can for me, Jimmy! I transplanted them from my row garden to my SFG last year, and they're doing great.jimmy cee wrote:I planted a bunch of chives last fall that a friend gave me.

They need to be broken up every few years, they get really 'clumped'. Dig it up, re-plant half, and then give the other half to someone who needs some.

Great...! Thanks GG! I'll have to keep an eye on them then. As long as the supposedly dead spearmint doesn't take over...

OOOOOOH! That is a battle I would like to see! Chives vs. Spearmint - could take a few years to see who wins.
