Help with garlic
i posted this elsewhere, but thought id try here too. we are in far northeast texas... about 40 miles north of dallas. im hoping this is the right spot.
anyway, i just planted garlic cloves, and im not sure if i planted them at the right time. was i supposed to put them in before last winter? and if i just planted them, how long before they are ready to harvest? ive never done garlic before and im finding some conflicting info.
TIA!

Re: Help with garlic
I have not tried garlic, well at least I have not harvested it yet. I did put some in this year. The general consensus is that it is best planted in the fall and left to over winter. It will grow if planted in the spring but may not be as successful. I also believe the general consensus is to harvest when the leaves have turned brown and begun to dry up. Should me late summer or early fall from my reading.
I am sure someone with more experience will chime in and correct me if I posted anything incorrectly. I say leave it be and give it a try, then plant more in the fall for next year. Just see what you get from your current planting.

Help with garlic
Hi Tia,
In Australia there are 2 recomended planting times depending on your climate.
In a warm to sub tropical climate area, garlic is best planted in early Autumn. In a cool to temperate climate area, it can be planted either in early Autumn or early Spring.
If planted at other times than these the bulbs will be smaller, thats all.
I find that planting 9 per Square Foot is the correct spacing.
I hope this helps.
Cheers, Peter
