hello I am a novice
Hi all: Thanks for the welcome. I have gardened before, but have retired from it since 1978. The house we moved into has lousy (Michigan Clay) soil. This will be the third year I am gardening, only the second time in the raised boxes. Did not have much success last year. Did not get a decent yield, except cukes and tomatoes, though the tomatoes were not as hearty as when I was growing in the clay. Lost my limas, beans, watermelons, cantaloupes, zucchinis, okras--no produce. the okras were harder than wood, even the small ones!! Possible that I started toooooo late. So here I am again, to give it the old college try!--Noomi

Re: Hello I am a novice
Noonie, Did you use the SFG method in the raised beds last year? If not, that may be why so many plants failed. In SFG, the soil doesn't count, you don't use it. You can set a box of Mel's Mix on any soil, patio, bricks, pavers, lava bed, marble counter tops! Do you have a copy of All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew? If not, get a copy and watch gardening be fun!
If you have any questions, please ask. Folks here are so willing to help.

welcome Noomi
and probably all of us here on the SF Forum second Sanderson's suggestion. I was able to borrow Mel's All New Square Foot Garden book from my library but it is so good I bought one to use all of the time.

Re: Hello I am a novice
Agreed! Get the book if you don't have it already.
Also - last year was terrible for tomatoes (and everything else)! I guess for us in the south, it was too much rain. Although I got my best crop of blueberries ever! But nothing else was happy. I've heard that time & again...
So don't give up hope.
