Finish For My New Frames
My new frame design:
I like the look of white frames. What is the consensus on latex paint? Can I paint the top, bottom, outside, and inside of the frame? Will the latex paint break down and contaminate the soil? They will have an open bottom.
Other finish ideas welcome.
Thanks

Re: Finish For My New Frames
Your box is so nice looking. Have you considered a white-wash stain instead of paint? The thing about stain is that you can paint later if you don't like it. But if you paint first, then it's painted. You can paint/stain the exterior sides and top rim. But don't paint or stain the interior. Some people use food-safe un-boiled linseed oil on the insides. Don't put anything on the inside that you wouldn't eat. These are just my thoughts.
Re: Finish For My New Frames
I did think of white stain. You are saying to stain the top rim and exterior sides leaving the bottom rim and interior sides bare? I guess that the advantage of stain is it will soak in and won't chip or peel?

Re: Finish For My New Frames
BC, I can't see a "bottom rim" in this photo. I see 3 layers of 2" x 4". My thought is to white wash stain the 3 exterior layers of boards and the top 1 1/2" lip of the top board. Nothing on the inside. I used one coat of an oil-based (toxic) clear wood stain (hint of color tint) on the exteriors and upper lips of my larger boxes made of 2" x 4" and smaller cedar fence board boxes. I love wood grain to show.
Re: Finish For My New Frames
Blackcast, thank you for showing us this wonderful looking bed. It looks great. I used linseed oil on my exterior. The would will last a long time. I have remove the soil out 3 times in the last 3 years and my wood still does not show internal damage. It's not cedar, maybe white wood or plain wood, what that is. I can't remember. I'm not a carperter, did not do serious researched to find what I should have use, because the garden growing bug got inside of me to just grow, grow, grow.
This is the site where i bought my oil:

Re: Finish For My New Frames
I hadn't considered oiling the frames but am now. It's my first SFG year and I'm using cheap redwood fence boards with butt joints and good glue. The linseed oil looked a bit pricey. I think I'll get a gallon of cheap vegetable cooking oil, do some boxes and not others to see if it helps.
