affraid Just as I feared, the bugs have found my cuke seedlings already! They're too young to die!!!  No  LOL

Time to try some new things, as we all know the definition of "insanity." So I'm going to mix the cayenne pepper version of this recipe (below) tonight. I've been hoping to find a use for the excessive amount of cayenne pepper that I have. I'll let you know how it goes.

This is from "Natural Solutions to Things That BUG You!" by Dr. Myles H. Bader, which a master gardener recommended (same guy who created a MONSTER by lending me "THE BOOK")...

I won't use pepper anymore ever since I hear how dangerous it could be to animals. Please be mindful of your cat's locations when using it and keep them away from it afterward.

DSTACK: Once again, I can't get out of this quote box...  I'll have to double check, but I'm pretty sure these are the same critters that originally invaded my cukes, and photos are earlier in this thread. It's the yellowish/greenish aphids.

DSTACK: I have a feeling this quote box issue is a Chrome weakness. Anyway, CC, thanks for the warning. I'll be cautious with my garden cats. They've been pretty good about not getting into the beds where I'll be using it.

I fixed your quote box.

Hey everyone, please read this thread to see how you can use the quote feature better. Also, it is a forum issue not a chrome issue. Boffer is looking into it.  What a Face  Yeah! Boffer!

Good Lord! silly me LOL

Anyway, those buggies are aphids and the insecticidal soap and water spray should help. Also, lady beetles and mantis love to eat them.

Dstack,

Those do appear to be aphids. A simple--if temporary-- fix is to spray those critters away with water. Of course, this assumes that additional moisture won't contribute to PM!

DECEMBER UPDATE Empty garlic/cayenne spray

Post  dstack 12/12/2013, 9:44 pm

Thanks for the other suggestions, but I had my heart set on trying this method. I've done the water spraying, and spraying neem oil to prevent mildew. I really need something as safe, but aggressive, as possible to repel these bugs. So I've made my batch of garlic/cayenne pepper with a little twist. I added a few drops of Dawn detergent, and about twice as much garlic and pepper than what the recipe calls for. And then after it sat 24 hours, I used the blender, then strained it into the sprayer.

What recipe? It's posted at the very top of this thread.

In addition, I took the pulp from the mixture, and placed it around each cuke seedling. My garden reeks of garlic and cayenne pepper! But if it keeps the bugs away, I'll be very pleased.

One thing I've noticed is that these bugs are not the same kind of bug as the yellowish/greenish aphids in the pics above. These are brown! I've read that aphids come in many different colors, so it could be chocolate aphids (my made up name), or mites. Does it really make any difference? I want them out whatever they are.  Mad
