I halve them and cook them right in the microwave cut side down, no water.  One half a med one can take about 8 - 12 minutes.  Wear an oven mitt and you can scoop the meat right out afterward. Sometimes I seed them first and sometimes I'm lazy and don't until after cooking.  But I love them best cut in cubes, seasoned and roasted in the toaster oven on the tray covered with parchment, peel left on, with brussel sprouts.

Oooo, sounds like a good candidate for the grill. I used to think that cooking veggies on th BBQ was silly -- until I tasted some. WOW!  I love you

Love both ideas....I have an industrial size oven/stove and it is not suitable for summer cooking!  Thanks, CC

Extreme care for the late winter squashes.  There are no pollinators in the area so I have to hand pollinate.  First I have to brush out all of the ants from the female.  After pollinating, I have to dust talc on the flower and fruit to keep the ants off.

Question:  Will pantyhose prevent rats and opossums from eating the fruits?

The original vines on the trellis are long dead, but daughter vines are spreading like crazy.  Where I have pollinated a female, I'm doing like Has and cutting off the vine a couple leaves out.  I'm hoping to get the fruit to ripen before December. Butternut squash - Page 2 Winter12

SR, This will all be in vain if the rat/opossum nibbles on them. Will panty hose / knee hose work?

I really don't know.  My big varmint is squirrels.  No idea about rats.  All rodents. I feed them....peanuts from Krogers, yep.

May as well try it, Sanderson. It probably won't make it any worse. I have a nibbled one that I need to put a knee hi on also but I don't have any to put on it or I would.

I would agree.  It can't hurt the endeavor.  Stupid rodents!

I'll check out Dollar Store for cheapies. I tossed PH, trouser socks and knee highs when I retired, except for one nice pair of panty hose for weddings and funerals.

Found a slug at the edge of my squashes nibble this morning. blech! Just went to the Dollar store yesterday and never thought of getting knee hi's. You know, maybe a trouser sock would suffice...
