Butternut squash

I have never grown butternut squash before. I planted Waltham butternut squash but these do not look like any pictures I can find.

This was from seed I got from Ace Hardware, I think American seed co.

Is this a butternut?

Nope!!!! That is Yellow Summer squash.

Seems to have been seed that was packaged wrong.

There are some benefits though. You're getting some squash NOW, it's tasty and will produce all summer!!!

The Butternut squash does not mature until late Fall. If you still want some Butternut squash (which is very good too) you can always go to your garden center and pickup some starts instead.

That's disappointing. I really wanted to try butternut and I do not think I will have room for another squash. My family is not big on squash. Will have to figure out how to use these. I suppose its ready to pick now.

It's really ok as around here if we don't ike it, the goats will.

This is a Waltham Butternut last Sept 9th in Maine. They have a bulbous bottom.

Don't overcook squash. Leave it a bit crisp. I always hated squash because the sourthern way of cooking squash and onions meant cooking to a mush. Now I just treat them like a quick stir fry.

I'm going to let the butternut trail down from my tabletop so I can have room this year.

That is an idea! I am not used to having a tt so forgot about that lol...I may have to rearrainge the herbs...have plenty of room for squash to roam around the bed bed..

This is on a TT with a trellis that it is just starting to climb. It can go up & down as my trellis is 6 ft high (from the ground up) and 9 ft wide. It spans the west ends of 2 TTs, one has these 2 squash and a watermellon and the other has 2 delicata squash & a volunteer sweet potato.

I just checked and I have 2 plants started at the same time but the other one is not even flowering yet. I can hope it is a butternut.

Fingers crossed for you. I'm waiting for some spring crops to give up so I can plant some butternut and some autum cup. I have a jack be little pumpkin coming up.

On closer inspection I think they are two different types of squash. The yellow summer is not vining but has a sort of stalk. The other one (I hope butternut like they were both supposed to be) IS VINING and has slightly smaller leaves with smoother stems.

This should work with the watermelon going north on the trellis and the butternut going south and I can trim up the lower leaves on the yellow and maybe brace the stalk. The sweet potato is coming up in the same square as the butternut. But I expect the onions in the 2 squares to the east of the squash to be done this week (the others to the east in that bed have bent over in the last few days), then I can let the sweet potato go that way.

The delicata squash (2 plants) in the bed to the south do vine but I think they are short vines so everything should be ok.

This happened to me last year, and my buddy the year before. Bought what we thought were butternut squash and ended up being that same yellow thing you have there.

They ended up turning dark orange after stayin on the vine until October and we just used them as Halloween decorations.
