Bug ID. Is it a wasp?
They swarm about 1 foot above the ground in swarms of a couple dozen.
Sometimes they are seen around my tomatoes.
You can walk right through them and they do not sting.
They look like some form of Parasitic wasp.
Can anyone ID this for me?

It certainly looks like a type of wasp. For identification try bugguide.net or your local County Extension Service.

Re: Bug ID. Is it a wasp?
So I guess to best way to search for something on Bugguide.net is to search through the pics?

Re: Bug ID. Is it a wasp?
If you have a nesting site (and that's what your description sounds like), you are blessed indeed. I would protect that site with care. These wasps feed on Japanese beetle grubs, as well as other soil born grubs.
As you note, they are quite laid back and very unlikely to sting, if you stay calm.

Re: Bug ID. Is it a wasp?
It is a good idea to know the basics of bug anatomy to start your search and hunt through photos by region. For example, you knew you had what you thought was a wasp, not a beetle nor a true bug.jjocsak wrote:So I guess to best way to search for something on Bugguide.net is to search through the pics?

Jeff those are great pictures you got! This is such a good example of keeping a good balance of nature. Some people might have thought a wasp and killed them all, not even knowing they were beneficial.

So that is what that is!! I've seen these around this past summer but couldn't figure out what they were. I figured some type of hornet. Are these things between 1"-2" long?

Re: Bug ID. Is it a wasp?
Ok, that makes a little more sense. I've seen them in our yard before but we were at an amusement park back at the end of July, and in this one particular area there was a swarm of them. I've never seen a wasp quite that big before...yuck. They look wicked!jjocsak wrote:1"-1 1/4" but not 2".

Western Yellow jacket? They don't seem to mind me working near them and they aren't aggressive. I thought they were suppose to be aggressive. ??
Re: Bug ID. Is it a wasp?
Looks like one to me!
