I recently made a new SFG for planting in my yard. I bought Posey Power, which is made from horse manure and brewer's grain, cow compost, and chicken manure pellets. This gave me, I thought, only four ingredients while I needed at least 5. I thought about it and decided I could have at least 12.

Now, the manufacturers apparently do not have to list what is inside, except of course for the main element, which is the animal waste. To make compost, both green and brown material is needed to make compost fairly quickly. I am guessing about this but my blended compost could have been made from grass clippings, leaf litter from a nearby forest, corn shucks, fresh hay, straw, dead tobacco leaves, soybeans, rabbit droppings, seaweed, or anything that might have been cheap and available to the manufacturer at the time. I no longer worry about how many ingredients I have. Instead, I buy new compost every now and then and hope that new ingredients have been used so that I can improve upon my old batch of compost.

I think SFGardeners need not be too worried about not having enough ingredients. Any dissenting opinions?

Diversity of compost kinds = diversity of nutrient sources.

The SFG books say 5 different types of compost. Each manufacturer uses what is available, but, if you use at least 5 different kinds, then you are at least trying for a good blend of nutrients til you can make your own, which, you will then know what is in your own compost. Jo
Ex:
Black cow compost
mushroom compost
lobster compost
forest compost
chicken compost

If it's anymore than the recommended variety of 5 composts it should be good. okay
