A Few Different Trellises

It was pretty today, so I thought I'd take some pictures.

This is the bed trellis. The top and bottom thirds are metal head and foot boards. The tubes in the middle third are old galv pipe. The boxes are 1x4, and I usually grow beans in them.










We call this one the space needle. The legs were the arches of a neighbor's deck canopy that blew down. The top is two flat wall decorations I picked up at a garage sale. One of them, I cut in half and welded back on at a right angle.







The corners have hooks for hanging pots. One summer I hung 2 tomatoes, 1 pepper, and 1 cuke in upside pots, plus had beans growing up the legs. I thought that would be very efficient use of 4sf, but the weather was awful that year, and all we got were beans. We usually just hang flowers now.






This is just made from scraps of wrought iron fencing that I scrounged. Beans love it.





This is my interpretation of a DNA double helix. I was going to use it for beans, but Liz claimed it for her flower bed.






These are 2 corners of the patio canopy that blew over. I plant beans on both sides, but I guess you knew that cause last years beans are still on it!

Wasn't yesterday in the PNW fantastic! Seriously a bummer that nothing is growing yet. Good day for pictures. I had decided that I was not going to buy seedlings this year (after I ordered pepper plants and a bay laurel), just seeds. But I had to do SOMETHING yesterday.

Really I was just going to buy fennel seed, but ended up buying a nursery pot of Italian parsley. Spent the afternoon transplanting some of that and taking pathetic pics of that process to post.

By the way....I can see that someone in your neighborhood (or household maybe?) was out getting dirty.

LOL yeah, I got tired of turning 2x4s into toothpicks! If I cut a piece of steel too short, I can just weld it back on and start over. Can't stretch a 2x4!

Yeah im with boffer on that 1 i think since this is my first year trying this im gonna go with the conduit trelis but i have a few contacts in the auto salvage world for when i decide to get creative and weld/fabricate something more interesting

Creative metalwork like that is the reason I'm itching to get a small "stick welder." My father in law taught me how to weld when we were making a fence around his property and I've had the metalwork bug ever since. Boffer I love that bean ladder. It's really cool!

Thanks for some ideas for trellis material. My son is taking welding next year I'll start collection stuff for him now. LOL.

I see you used some cinder blocks, yours is the first cinder block/brick I've seen. Hope I call pull it off as well as you seem to have!

If you're a serious DIYer and find yourself saying "this would be so much easier/better if I could weld" then it's time to get started. NOW Don't wait till you're starting to get gray like I did. It's never been cheaper or easier to get into it. If you don't know anyone that can help you get started, here's how to do it. Find a welding supply store close to your house. They will sell either Miller or Lincoln, one's blue one's red, don't buy any other brand. You want to buy a 120 volt MIG machine-it's all a homeowner needs to get started. They're easier and faster to use for fab work than stick. They will be happy to take some time, when they're slow, to show you enough to get you started.

Being able to weld opens up a whole new world of creativity and scrounging opportunities.

Oh yeah, Jinx's post reminded me, don't be callin' yourself a welder unless you take classes and get certified. Putzing around home, no matter how good you get, is a very small part of the field. I always qualify myself as a 'hobby welder'.

I happened to have the blocks from leftover projects; I just threw them on the ground-I was going for the 'rural' look! I know your brick project will be prettier.

Rickinoc hasn't shown up yet from the old forum. He posted pics of his block beds, 2 courses, that he built in his backyard-very nice looking.

We like masonry and concrete projects for their ageless and classical look-they're never out of style, if the project is appropriate for the surroundings.
