Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
oh my these veggies pics are delicious!!
our family loves this time of year when you can go out to the garden and harvest your dinner
last nights supper was red, purple and yellow potatoes, onions, garlic and rattlesnake beans....first time for us to grow Rattlesnake beans.....boy were those Rattlesnake beans yummy!....steamed with butter...to bad they don't keep their purple stripes when cooked.....the plants are super healthy and we are going to have LOTS to harvest this year....as they are the first ones to the dinner table and tasty we for sure will be growing these again next year!
happy gardening
Rose....who loves to hear about others veggies they love so that our family can give them a try and find something new to grow in our familygardens!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I've been lax on pics lately but almost nightly I am using something from the garden. Last night I made a stir fry with some yellow squash and Zucchini. I'm eating tomatoes every day. The Black Cherries will be on my must have in the garden every year from this point forward. They are awesome. Peppers are starting to give me fruits sporadically but they are full of blooms and I expect a bountiful fall.

sanderson, That melon looks so good. How did you know it was ripe? I have melons blooming in the greenhouse and I am full of hope. It is a new world for me.

Last night was a baked omelet with a dozen of our eggs with garlic (frozen chopped from last year) shredded savoy cabbage leaves, cilantro, and peas in it.

Zucchini
Have in ground garden, just learning about SFG! Found giant zucchini hiding under my not very productive plant. Will definitely find something to do with this gem tonight.

Turan, This time it was easy. It was on the ground! I was out of town for 3 days.
Here are 3 melons showing the transformation from smooth green to textured beige:
I pick when rough and very little green.

Hi, SvanahGirl, Welcome to the Forum!
Go to Home, "Introduce Yourself", and and share your gardening story. If you don't have one already, get a copy of the book, All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd Edition, by Mel Bartholomew.
As far as what to do with the zucchini, go to Home, and check out the recipes.
Again, welcome.

Yellow banana peppers and a little mint. From the school garden, lots of kale.

What are you eating from your garden tonight?
I took the huge zucchini that was hiding under those leaves and cut it into quarters, then par boiled it and completed a yummy casserole with eggs, and cheese. SOOOO good! Also still getting tomatoes but doing the pollination for them because it is so hot and humid here. Eggplant happy as well.

What are you DRINKING from a garden?
Went to an organic U-pick farm to get some fruit. Got more than enough to make a quart and a 1/2 of raspberry cordial. It needs to steep and be shaken daily for at least a month. Should be fun to maybe save it and enjoy over Thanksgiving and Christmas, if I can wait that long. The recipe is here if anyone is interested. http://www.preservingyourharvest.com/MakingFruitLiqueurs.html

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
LM, Years ago, when my Dad was into making home wine, he made some peach wine. Dang, that was good.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Svanah girl, your zucchini will likely become more productive now that you removed the huge one. At least that was the case for a zucchini plant I had--after I harvested a 5-1/2 pound zucchini, the vine had enough energy for more and more!
Last night, we ate bok choy and radish slaw as well as a kale-Swiss chard pie. It was fabulous (if I say so myself!)

Oh my that sounds delicious. Long ago my uncle made sweet dandelion wine. When I purchased some from a winery years ago I didn't think the quality came came close to his wine. As we know - -

What are you eating
Was looking at it this morning to see if I needed to pollinate it myself and it looks like there are a bunch coming up. No flowers open yet, but it might just do ok.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
LlamaMama, Congratulations on (and thanks for the idea for) the homemade fruit libation. It will be a beautiful gift from the heart when you serve it at Thanksgiving. Wonder how it would taste drizzled over the whipped cream crowning a slice of dark chocolate torte? BTW, in a recent Splendid Table interview of Mario Batali on making gelato, he says the Italian gelato is made from overripe fruit, meaning when they're almost to the point of attracting mold spores. The fruit is soft and has concentrated flavors. Wonder if that would work with homemade liqueurs? Nonna

CC your produce is beautiful. Bon apetit!
LlamaMama, I love the info from the site you posted. I bookmarked it. I think I'm going to try making my own fruit libations myself.

The first of my Calima beans. YUM!!! I will definitely be planting these next year, and providing the necessary support for the 'bush' beans which are not tall, but very floppy. THEY ARE DELISH!!!

Nice!
Very nice GG. Today, my daughter and I just tried our first Kentucky Wonder beans (bush variety). They taste REALLY good.Goosegirl wrote:The first of my Calima beans. YUM!!! Oh, and my wife just placed an order for Sungold tomatoes next season. We all LOVE those. And they never stop producing (plus, it's been resistant to my tomato fungus issues). I just popped one in my mouth... like candy!

I love Kentucky Wonder - a delicious variety! I am looking forward to many more pickings on my little 8 sq ft of Calimas. Just picked 2 gallons last night, so I will have to let them go for a few more days before picking again. Tonight I steamed the first 2 pickings, so last night's bounty will be for this weekend.
