Beans and greens! Last year's SFG-grown Good Mother Stallard dry beans cooked in broth made from a New Seasons smoked ham hock. Well-cooked ham hock parted out to add back to the beans. Greens were all from yard and garden: Swiss chard, spinach and wild lambs quarters (cook chard first for 10 minutes, add spinach, cook some, then add the lambs quarters leaves last). All served with some home-grown garlic stirred in and new farmers' market chopped young Walla Walla Sweet onions for garnish. Lake County (CA) zinfandel in the glass. Yummmm. two hours later and I'm still full. Nonna

I harvested spinach, a little bit of lettuce and a couple of radishes. My new favorite kitchen gadget is the salad spinner What are you eating from your garden today? - Page 37 3868 . Im going to have to plant more than one full square of spinach/lettuce. More like 7 or more. They did taste good Smile

Total yummo!!! I've been thinking about growing Good Mother Stallard dry beans, but don't find them locally. Do you get them from a catalog? Which one?

What are you eating from your garden today? - Page 37 Empty Good Mother Stallard bean seed

Post  Nonna.PapaVino 5/28/2013, 5:39 pm

CapeC, Last year I ordered the seed from Seed Savers Exchange. This year I'm going to try to get seed saved from last year's harvest to grow. Good Mother Stallard is a very good tasting dry bean, and cooks up more plump than the usual pinto bean. If you take the time to soak them overnight (which breaks down the flatulence-causing compound through a mild fermentation), and discard the first soaking water, then cook them in broth or other liquid, they don't cause embarrassing intestinal gas. Delicious and discreet, what's not to like? Wink Nonna

English peas (bumper crop this year), Irish potatoes, Swiss chard (sounds like I'm doing lots of traveling, doesn't it?), yellow squash, zuchinni, beets, carrots and onions. Some tomatoes have quarter-sized ones on; butter beans are starting to flower; kohl rabi is very close to ready.

I have never made pesto before today. I went to the garden with my kids and saw that my basil was starting to send up blossoms so I gave it a big trim. While doing this I was wondering what to do with all the basil since I normally use it for pizzas or pasta sauce but really didn't want to make either today. Than I remember the pesto recipe in the newest edition SFG book. So that is what I made for lunch. I loved it!!! hungry My husband and two year old ate it too with no complaints.

I admit I ate all of those berries at breakfast. What a Face To your question on last years painful pinching -- I think pinching was probably good since the plants are so totally loaded with fruit. (actually logging the number of ripened fruit being picked) Of course the fullest ripened berries are worth waiting for. drooling

I'm jealous! I actually log how many of everything I pick as well; I like to know the total yield from my garden as well as how different varieties do. That's how I found myself totally amazed that 1 jalapeno plant can produce 200 peppers!

Rhubarb (out the garden ) Crumble
Used 1 pound / 500 gram 100 grm / 4 oz light brown sugar & 4 table spoons of masala wine ( or sherry wine ) & 1/2 pint of cold water then slowly brought to slight simmer , as soon as it started to soften took it of the heat , strained off the juice into a jug ,put the rhubarb in a dish and covered it ... returned the juice to the pan and simmered it down to a slightly thick concentration in about 12 minutes .

Let it cool , made the crumble then put the cooked rhubarb in a dish so it ended up about 1/2 inch deep, add a decent sprinkle of raisins and some sliced almonds gently stir in then top it with 3/4 inch layer of crumble and bake in the oven .

The raisins and almonds were Alison's own idea . I must confess it was a resounding success . Al & Munchkin had ice cream on theirs , I just enjoyed mine as was right out the oven.

I'm pleased I have four rhubarb plants ,we'll be seeing lots more dishes like that I'm sure .

I still have a month or so until I can harvest anything from my garden Sad
We just got it planted, our garden was completely thawed out about a week ago. We went right into unually hot weather so I am hoping that it will speed up the growning.
