Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Almost got a strawberry. My one plant that survived the winter put out 1 blossom, produced one berry that I have eagerly watching grow from a little green button into a medium-sized white berry. 2 days ago I saw it just starting to blush pink. This morning I went to check on it and it is GONE!!!

Broccoli (medium-small main heads from Apollo) and my favorite, sideshoots (from Atlantis). It's about 10oz of broccoli, not a lot, but it's the first time I've grown it and it really is so much better fresh!

Our green beans are just really starting to grow and attaching themselves to the trellis. We are doing pole beans.
We also noticed buds on our watermelons & zucchinis.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
We have been eating all sorts of lettuce from the garden for weeks now. The broccoli is ready now, so we've been enjoying broccoli picked right after the water is put on to cook it. Snow peas from the garden are on the menu for tonight's stir fry, and sugar snaps will be on the table tomorrow.
First plantings of turnip greens are long gone and the new crop isn't quite ready yet.
It's still too early for most of the rest of what's been planted, although some of last year's garlic is starting to look pretty promising.

Swiss Chard
Harvested a colorful assortment of swiss chard (Ruby Red and Bright Lights variety). Eye candy, greens and yellows and orange and pink and red:
(the colors look brighter that the picture suggests)
Looked great but it was bitter .
When you do stop growing / harvesting swiss chard? Does it become bitter or does it stop growing?

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
sugar snap peas - only 2
strawberries - gave to neighbors
Last year, we harvested Swiss chard throughout the season. No bitter leaves during the summer, though I did harvest the leaves on the smaller side. (That's a mighty pretty harvest you have!)

Greens! By the colanderful! Also have picked a few jalapeno peppers, and harvested basil for basil lemonade to go with tonite's dinner (tomato basil chicken brats from the CSA, green beans with walnuts, new potatoes and salad).

The end of the broccoli, the beginning of two types of cauliflower, the first carrots of the year, new potatoes, and our first greenhouse cucumber.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Yep, they're way ahead of everything I planted this year. Since our ground doesn't freeze, it seems that covering with plastic to keep the overwintering taters from drowning is all that's necessary.FamilyGardening wrote:Boffer.... wowzers what a great harvest you have there!!.....are those taters from last years over winter plants?...
From the other day...I take my corn off the cob before freezing, and I don't blanch. It is unbelievably better than store bought frozen corn.
I can't believe how big your cabbage head got already. I swear you live in your own banana belt! Are you close to the Sound? That area seems to always be ahead of everybody else.

Hi, J - I find that Swiss Chard is best young. It's the same family as beets, but it is a sturdy green and needs longer cooking time. I love what it does for soups! I was still harvesting Swiss Chard last December 5 - it just wouldn't stop growing and I wasn't going to pull the plants until it did. I am near Green Bay, WI - zone 4, my garden is pretty well done by mid-October.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
The peas are just starting to form. I'm hoping to grab a handful to go with the last of our spinach and radish. The spinach "bolted" so I pulled it up last night, washed some for salads, and then cooked the rest up for my hubby and myself for a late night snack. I have never cooked my fresh spinach before. It was nummy!! I've also never planted cool weather crops in the fall...but may just try it. The fresh salads this spring have been wonderful!! The cilantro looks big enough to start harvesting so I'm planning some good meals for our lunches this week.
We have flowers on zucchini and cucumber but no fruit yet. I've never had luck with zucchini so am keeping my fingers crossed Mel's Mix will make the difference. I also planted a couple radish with each zucchini as a "companion" to keep away bugs. I'm loving my new garden!
