Hello everyone. I'm gardening for the first time this year. I've always wanted a garden but was afraid of all the work in the heat. I finally convinced my husband to build me a raised bed in May, we filled it with potting soil/top soil and planted.

Then I discovered SFG when I was looking for gardening information online. I saw someone on a forum mention they got 100 ears of corn out of a 4 X 4 box and I went, WHAT? I was always told corn took lots and lots of space. I grew up near corn fields, you can't grow corn in a BOX! My search was on for this miracle method of gardening and I found this forum, bought the book, and convinced my hubby to build more boxes. He also built my mom boxes. And my best friend boxes...

When the pickle worms took over my cucumbers and squash a couple weeks ago, I realized they were a lost cause anyway, so I yanked them out this past weekend, dug out half of the top soil/potting soil and put it in the bottom of another box. My boxes are deep so I needed something in the bottom half and our dirt is all hard clay. I haven't planted my fall seeds yet but I have them ordered.

My husband is still shaking his head. He's humoring me. Thinks I won't stick with it.

Now I'm working on my compost pile...

glad you\'re here  I believe you may be in my region. If not it makes no difference as we all love gardens and gardeners. I'm so glad you found us. Are you topping off the dug out beds with 6" of mels mix? I hope so as it is a great growing medium.

You still have time to replant cukes and summer squash if you want. We still have at least 90-120 days until our first frost. Try a couple of squares. You will always be able to plant lettuce in those squares up till 4-5 weeks before the first frost if the squash and cukes still don't do. Lettuce will also survive a light frost so you haven't lost any time or space.

Kay

Welcome Millenia.  I am just west of Griffin in Brooks.  I used to work in Griffin.  This is my second year doing SFG.  It sure beats gardening in the red ga clay.

Good to know there are other Georgians on here.! And one in my own growing climate. I'm sure that will come in beneficial.  I don't have any seeds to replant with. Mine were from plants I had bought at Lowes. I will concentrate on all this other stuff I've never grown before and see what happens. Laughing

And, yes, I put MM in the top of my beds. I still have one more to fill. My original bed is 4 X 8 and my new ones are 3 X 6. I still have an okra, 3 peppers, and some herbs. One of my peppers was attacked by a monster tomato worm (something else I learned about recently) but the other two remain untouched. I guess there really is something to the separating the plants to confuse the bugs thing. I had squash between my pepper plants. He ate almost every leaf off of one pepper plant but didn't touch the other two. He was bigger around than my thumb and I didn't even SEE HIM! My husband spotted him. Guess who had to do the squashing?

Welcome from California glad you\'re here

I'm a first year gardener and SFG-er.  Your husband sounds like mine!  He was glad that I found a "hobby" in retirement.  He builds the boxes for me, helps carry the heavy stuff.  All the while shaking his head.

I must say that this is an excellent Forum.  I have learned so much from the members.  Again, welcome

Millenia, please don't bold your type.  It makes it very difficult to read on most forums.  Just trying to be helpful my gardening friend.

Welcome to the forum Millenia! Sounds like you are off to a great start and have had some fun gardening adventures already. I hope you can do corn next and get that 100 ears from one box!

I noticed it was bolded but didn't do it on purpose. Sorry it hurts your eyes.
