Having read the instructions that came with my multiplier onions sets last fall I know that when the leaves lay down it's time to harvest.  However, it says to not water for a week before doing this.  Well, it has rained quite a bit the last 2 days and that is when most of them look like they are ready for harvest.  There is more rain in the forecast.

What is the reason for letting the soil dry out?  If I pulled them now, what would happen?

Well, now we just go 5" of rain in the past 2 days. Should I go ahead and harvest the multiplier onions or should I wait until the soil has dried out.

Opinions please.

I would say, wait until things dry out. Give a little tug and if the plant is really still hanging on give it a few more days.

Are the tops all fallen over and laying on the ground? that's the sign.
Also, you will want to lift them from below with a garden fork, loosen the soil so any roots are also loosened.

Can you cover them with plastic during the rain? That way they would have their own rain coat.Laughing

that would probably encourage a rot situation.

Most of them have fallen.  The weather forecast for this week:  3 days of rain and then 3 days of partly cloudy with a high of 73-86.

By a tug do you mean to grasp it close to the bottom of the leaves?

By the way - both of you - thanks for the help.
