Onion - Celery - Carrots - Possible to get new plant from planting roots?
Hello all,
We forgot about an onion way in the back of our refrigerator. It was the bottom third (with the root). Well, it has sprouted shoots (quite a few actually). I was wondering, will this onion generate another plant if I plant it in Mel's Mix?
Also, I've seen pictures of celery root and carrot tops growing as well. Will these actually produce new produce, or will they simply produce greenery?

Oh, how fun! Plant it and see what happens. My guess is it would proceed to bolt and produce seed, being as how it must be in its second year. Let us know what happens. Nonna

Fascinating
I run a daycare out of my home. We used all our celery about 2 weeks ago and as an experiment we are growing it in the window in water so far we have sprouts. It's growing quickly I change out the water every other day or so.

I'm actually doing this experiment with onions--well, I will as soon as the ground thaws & it stops snowing.
I read somewhere last year that *all* onions are capable of asexual reproduction, as is the case with multiplier & potato onions. That the bulbs we buy at the grocery store are just first-year from-seed bulbs and that in the second year, the bulb will want to reproduce: either sexually by bolting & going to seed or by cloning itself. Whether each "clone" will bolt, I don't know.
So last fall/early winter I purposely kept two sprouting onions in the drawer to see if they would "keep" long enough to plant in the Spring. So far, so good. I've had to cut the tops off each bulb once, being careful to leave enough intact at the top so as not to damage the bulb.
Each original bulb has split into quite a few sections, so we'll see if they bolt or not this summer.
I've read that you can successfully grow celery & I've wondered about carrots. Do you have any carrot starting this way also or just celery? Is your celery also putting out roots or just shoots?

Just onion so far-
I just have one onion with sprouts so far. I made onion soup last night and I saved lots of the roots from that.
Now that I've seen beccawhited's celery, I want to try that as well. I don't know that I'm going to use precious Mel Mix for these experiments though!
Thanks to everyone for the replies!!
