How Do You Get Rid of Bindweed? Empty How Do You Get Rid of Bindweed?

Post  JocyMc 6/4/2013, 12:16 am

Summer hasn't even started and already the bindweed is trying to take over the flower garden. It's gotten so aggressive that it's climbing the iris'! I've dug it out, pulled it out, and painted it with root & stump killer (supposedly it goes back and kills the root). It just keeps growing and taking over more of the garden. It doesn't do any good to put the black weed fabric down. It just grows underneath it until it finds a tear and then it comes up and takes over. I've been battling this weed for 4 years now. It's the main reason I turned to raised bed gardening. It was getting into everything and taking over. Last year I tore out my well established strawberry bed and put it in a raised bed because I spent so much time pulling the bindweed out of it.

How do you get rid of this noxious weed?

Perhaps make all of your beds raised beds, JocyMc?
Can the bindweed climb up the legs of a raised bed?

I have one box that battles bindweed every year. What I am trying this year is absolute vigilance in snipping it at ground level every few days. Supposedly keeping the new leaves chopped out will eventually starve out the roots and they will die. I check my garden everyday for it and am trying not to let any of the bindweed get more than a few inches tall. So far it seems to be working. it seems like it is getting slower and slower to sprout up new leaves. I won't know until the end of the season/next season how successful I am, but since nothing else has worked I am willing to give this a try! How Do You Get Rid of Bindweed? 671790

GG, I Googled bindweed. My heart goes out to you! And to think that people plant Morning Glories [same group] on purpose! Forty years ago my mother-in-law complained about MG.

Kelejan - I've got the vegetables and fruit in raised beds but have flower beds that edge the fence and the house. I had most of the middle of the yard mulched and planted with flowers and shrubs but it has just become too much to keep the bindweed out of. I'm in the process of reseeding that area so the weed will just get mowed down. Like GG I've just been cutting it away and hoping it will eventually all die.

I have bindweed everywhere as it seems like it's the only thing that will grow in a bad drought. I use Roundup on the ground away from the garden and pull them in the beds. Stump killer works the best I've been told.

You cannot get rid of bind weed. It grows from the earth's core and then proceeds to wrap around the earth several times before popping up in ones garden. Shocked

JocyMc,
Just keep pulling it out when it gets to be about 6 inches tall my beds had more than their fair share last year as they were made using 4 yr. old horse muck that hadn't quite reached the kill off weeds temp in composting .

Round up gel on a small artists stiff paint brush does work so long as you only get it on the bindweed leaves . I've hit most of what came up this year along with docks and the odd thistle . Left it for a week and the weeds came out really easy out my 36 inch deep ANSFG beds .
I don't think it would be so easy if you are talking about mother earth own stuff as it tends to me heavier and more compact .

Ok, I had to look it up to see what the plant looks like. Found this, so looks like your method of starving it is right on target.

Back in the days when I did use Round-Up on occasion, it did nothing but irritate the bindweed. I have had more success with vinegar and scissors than I did with the RU.

I hear you are to never try to remove the roots but keep mowing or cutting it down to the ground. Essentially starving the plant to death. If you try to pull it the brittle roots fracture and put out more sprouts.

I believe it too! I have used Round-Up (the max stuff), covered it with a patio of 16" square pavers, put down weed cloth, and vinegar. IT DOES NOT DIE!!! waste of time

When I pulled out a very long bind weed in my front lawn, a big crack opened up that was three feet deep! I guess I will have to wait a few days for the weed to grow back and pull that crack back together! Boy you are right Rooster!
