Since I was a little girl there has been this love affair with strawberries, so this is a dream come true, backyard strawberries!
Thanks Mel!

Congratulation LM, those look beautiful and I bet they taste better than any strawberries you have ever eaten. I know you spent a lot of time and thought getting those to the table. Well done.

One of my first garden memories is building a strawberry pyramid with my dad - I was 4 at most. I would love to build one of my own someday. Congrats on fulfilling the dream!

oooooohhhhh..... those look awesome. I guess you know after seeing your picture it is going to be hard for me to keep pinching the blooms on mine. Sad

Hope you enjoy the fruits of your efforts LM.

Thanks Yolos, they are wonderful. It is satisfying knowing they're entirely pesticide free. It's almost silly how I savor them.
Goosey - one of my kid-garden memories is piling into the back end of a stationwagon with other kids to go strawberry picking out on Long Island back in the 60's, a place called Patchogue, I believe. Sure hope you get to build your own pyramid and fulfill your dream.
Bob - keep pinching and you will not be disappointed!

In the early 60s I belonged to 42nd tank battalion, 7th regiment based in Patchogue . quite a long time ago.
I am seriously considering setting up a strawberry patch, mainly in containers.
Do you know where any info's available for this ?
Time to plant, type of berry, medium, etc. etc.
I'm gonna need all the help I can get, I just love strawberries in loads of whipped cream...yep I know where I can get as much whipped cream as I need... Wink

Wow, always a pleasure to bump into someone with L.I. experience. I didn't know there was a military regiment based in Patchogue in the early 60's, then again, I started kindergarten in 62' so my world was pretty small back then, to the west of Patchogue, growing up along the Great South Bay in West Islip.

Strawberries- I think you have to get the best variety recommendations from your extension service. They'll know the best ones for your climate. The rest of what I know was learned from Mel's book and this forum. And local extension printed material. And calls to the berry supplier. My few berry plants on the ground are larger plants, but not larger berries. The 64 berry plants in the table top is a 100% satisfying experience to fuss over them without stooping over. So simple to care for them and pluck out any stray weeds and check for any bugs, apply mulch. I love the table top BUT admit to being concerned over how long the bottom will actually hold up. At least through the past 14 months I can say it is perfect so far.
Get berries!

A few miles west of Patchogue, located on the Sunrise Hwy was an Italian Restaurant named Ciro's. My buddy and I came from Queens every Tuesday evening for meetings.
We usually had dinner there and it was always delicious.
Sunrise Hwy at that time was 2 lanes on each side, however traffic was sparse.
Once past Patchogue it was driving on country roads. on the sunrise !!!
I checked Google Earth and the armory bldg is still there.
Also was a German restaurant (cannot recall name) close to the armory.
A fellow in knickers, white shirt with red suspenders always served us by a roaring fireplace in the winter... A BLAST FROM THE PAST
Thank you for the tip on the local ext, I'll check with them soon

The ethnic culinary diversities are amazing in that entire area!
I suppose one could dine on truly authentic prepared foods from around the world within a 50 mile radius or less.

Hope your extension service came through for you.
