IRIS ROOTS

We have iris roots above the ground and would like to move the roots to another area, which is the best time to move the roots? The roots I will not be moving, should I just cover them with soil?

Iris are really easy to move, divide and replant. There are a few previous thrads about this. Here is one.

Iris corms like to lay on the surface, with roots extending straight down out of the bottom surface of the corm into the soil. You can throw a bit of soil on them if it makes you feel better - irises are virtually indestructible! Here are some of mine from last spring - have been ignored, dug up by squirrels, and nipped by the mower on occasion. Last fall I dug them all out and what neighbors did not take I threw into the back yard around my new SFG box. Another month and I should be able to see what took. Some are even still on the back patio in a tub that never got thrown onto the soil - just found it when the snow melted.
