Melon Mound

Back around Thanksgiving 2012, my neighbor was cutting down a large elm tree in his yard. The tree cutters were mulching the tree on the spot and I asked them to dump the pile of good looking chips in my yard. I've used the pile, little by little, to mulch my non-edibles, make walkways, and mulch around the fruit trees and berry bushes.
Now I have a knee-high mound of chips left, maybe a bit taller, about 5-6 feet in diameter.
The soil under and around the pile is rich -- well fed by decomposing chips. I was wondering if I could plant my melons and maybe pumpkins around that pile, and let them climb onto the pile.

Any experiences with stuff like that or some feedback?

do a search for the Back to Eden thread in the forum....sounds like you have a wonderful start!! They use woodchips as a mulch that turns into compost after a few months. From what it sounds like you're already there!!
