Tell me he isn't evil!
I was finally able to plant my new (first time!) TT sfg Sunday. I came home from work on Monday to find little holes dug in the dirt and lima bean seeds on the top of the soil. I came home again today to lima beans on the soil... and ants on the other bed. I'm pretty sure I found my bean culprit.... Maybe he had gas? He was smashed flat and appeared to be "creeping" about 10ft from my sfg. I covered it with tulle tonight... We'll see!

coupon magic, we wait with bated breath for the next installment of this saga.
Seriously, I hope you get it sorted out.

At this point, I'm amused! He looked straight out of a cartoon smashed flat on that stump. Hopefully the tulle will keep him out of things.

I just adore squirrels. They're so resourceful and crafty. And cute. The ants would bother me more. I've heard they are near impossible to get rid of, once they get in the garden.

I have squirrels that dig in my veg gardens also!
I keep the beds covered until the seedlings get big enough.
I also put plastic forks in the beds to try to keep them out...

Oh great idea with the forks Dunkinjean.
Jazzy, the ants definitely do bother me more. The squirrels are cute.. this guy has tons of personality. He taunts my dog through the storm door too. I'm hoping I got to the ants early enough. The sfg is on 2' 4x4 posts and it sits on my patio. I can't believe it took them all of 2 days. I sprayed the concrete and the very bottom of the posts where they touch the concrete. Hopefully, they wouldn't have had time to set up shop already.
I just moved here in November, I hope this isn't a precursor of things to come!

Re: Tell me he isn't evil!
Back in my landscaping days we used cayenne pepper and moth balls to keep chipmunks, squirrels and deer out of the landscape and gardens.
Just a thought.

Re: Tell me he isn't evil!
What an adorable picture! I can sympathize with you though. Thankfully they don't dig in my garden in the growing season, but every spring, I get TONS of oak trees growing in my garden. And I swear there are no oak trees at all in my neighborhood, so the little pests are bringing acorns all the way from other neighborhoods just to plant them in my garden. Hrump!
Re: Tell me he isn't evil!
Maybe he is just trying to tell you that lima beans are gross, you should plant something else instead

Re: Tell me he isn't evil!
Try cinnamon sprinkled the edges of the box for the ants. I had ants in my indoor orchids this winter and I sprinkled the cinnamon on top of the moss growing medium. Worked.
Some were trying to set up a colony on the floor under the table the orchids are sitting on. Lots of ants and egg casings. Cinnamon and within 2 days no more ants. Just a lot of discarded egg casings.

Re: Tell me he isn't evil!
Thank you for the wealth of information! Hopefully I can get them under control. It's nice to see more natural options on the table. I will definitely be trying these. It's odd but I haven't seen a single ant mound in my yard Hoggar. I have no idea where they came from. I didn't get home until dusk this evening, but I didn't see them today.
Oh come now cheyannarach, Lima beans are awesome! Even my son will eat them! Any vegetable he will eat is awesome in my book.
