Chinese Cabbage and Radicchio, spacing? Empty Chinese Cabbage and Radicchio, spacing?

On GrowingYourGreens John mentioned Home Depot had a plant sale for the next several days (Apr 5 thru 8th) so I drove over. Well, maybe in Calif he can get a large variety of crops, but in Maine, all they had was 2 herbs, Rosemary and Thyme, and some strawberry plants, brassicas, and Radicchio. I picked up a few pots.

How many Chinese Cabbage and Radicchio do you plant in a square?
Can you cut off outer leaves to use as they grow or does one have to harvest the whole head?

I'm keeping them indoors except to harden off on nice afternoons for a while yet.

I went there today, too, QB. Same choices in my area as yours. But I ended up with 5 new strawberry plants! So now I'll have 3 different varieties.

Don't know about your spacing but when I planted radicchio seeds that never grew, I was thinking 1 per sq as they seem to get pretty big. My pak choi that always grows is spaced at 4/sq.

CC....Thanks, I think you're right. I seem to remember putting one chinese cabbage in a square before and I'm sure radicchio grows as large as that. I'll put 1 per unless I hear differently.
I almost forgot about Pak choi and have some to sow this year so I've just added that to my garden plan. Thanks for the reminder.

I was pretty bummed out about Home Depot. They didn't have any annuals either, but of course, with all the cold and they have no roof over their plant area, they can't have many things yet, it being so darn cold around here. The rackes looked so bare. I hope they have another sale when they get in their shipments.

We're looking at 50s and 60s days and 40s nites this week. I hope the trend keeps rising. I'm tired of the cold snaps.

I grow radicchio @ 1 /sq and that works well. The plant get pretty big leaves spread out from the crown before forming the radicchio head--I don't think you could go 4 / sq and have them form heads.

Chinese Cabbage and Radicchio, spacing? Empty Radicchio spacing

Post  Paul Crowe 3/25/2023, 5:40 am

I grow a cultivar of radicchio called radicchio di Treviso and as my beds are 4' wide I can grow five rows. The bigger ball headed ones [for want of a better description] I grow at 12" centres. With the former you do not need to harvest the whole head but can take leaves from the outer plant for salads without damaging the growth.
