Sigh. I have been storing our compost components in our garage. They are just waiting to be blended and used. I have been quite happy knowing that I had successfully completed my quest for the elusive five compost components.

My wife told me that our garage had a very unpleasant smell. I checked it out, and indeed it did. I thought I might have even detected a whiff of ammonia. (I know an ammonia smell signals danger.) So I unstacked all the compost bags and put them on our the porch (a single layer). At the bottom of all the stacks in the garage was my "Moo-nure"

When I bought this stuff from Home Depot, I honestly thought the bags said "Organic composted cow manure." It actually says, "Organic compost with cow manure."

Of course this MUST go back to HD. More than anything I just needed to vent. Thanks so much for listening. I know you all know that good feeling of having found all your soil components. I also know you all can commiserate with me.

I have used moo-nure as 1 of my composts with no adverse reactions. In fact I had bumper crops. The chicken poo compost is the one that smell high right out of the bag, but mixed up and allowed to "air out" a day before planting and all was fine.

Thanks so much for your response Kay. Coming from a fellow southern-based gardener, it meant a lot. I was dreading the process of taking things back and buying a correct replacement.

As it turns out, I do have composted chicken manure as a compost component. I'll investigate what's going on with it a bit later this morning. Glad to hear that simply airing out will be sufficient.

cheers
