Crazy weather
It is currently 55 degrees here today (Canton, Ohio), and was in the 60s overnight. But it will go into the 20s tonight. So I took advantage of this brief window and turned over my compost pile. Hopefully it will be usable in MM by April.

Re: Crazy weather
Good idea! I can't believe how up and down our weather has been this winter with a lot of thaw and then plunging to freezing overnight. We had 70*F yesterday, overcast and our windows open w/ a nice breeze. Then woke up to tornado sirens and pouring rain this morning
and snow forcasted for tomorrow.
I have been tempted several times to sow some cold-weather crops outside a little early, but it's just been too crazy! It leaves me really questioning what spring and summer will be like this year. I think I'll be making sure I have plenty of plastic and mesh covering available just in case. Do you think we've had enough of a cold spell to dwindle the bug population a bit?

That's a good question for my area also, Lemonie. Got my fingeres crossed. We're in the 50's today, so I've been out in the yard all morning. Didn't see any signs pests, but the snow just melted away a few minutes ago. It sure didn't deter the weeds tho...I've been pulling them for the past 20 minutes.
I found this cool link for a calendar with historical averages. The link is for my area but you can put your own in at the top:

Speaking of pests, I did see the biggest skunk in the world wandering through the yard this morning. Must have woken up with this warm spell. I can deal with bunnies and woodchucks and even racoons, but skunks are no fun.

Lemonie,
Im in the same weather pattern as you right now being in Cincinnati OH... 70 last night, and the forecast high for Friday is 19 with snow...
And since I am a rookie, its ultra confusing LOL
We've always had crazy weather but it went from crazy to completely insane.

It's unseasonaly warm in Florida too. Usually we have a few months of 40 to 60 degree weather but it's been in the 70's and 80's a lot this winter. I planted cool weather crops and I need the coolness to happen! LOL

I'm chiming in because I am delighted to see fellow Ohioans commiserating about this blasted weather. I'm just south of Columbus and it is bizarre. I typically don't have to deworm my llamas in winter since the bugs get frozen but I have to deworm this week since we've had several days this month in the 60's which of course keeps them alive.

Re: Crazy weather
Crazy weather indeed! We are forecast for a 'high' of -13 tomorrow, and supposed to be 36 by Sunday. I know, it is all cold, but for those of you not in the frigid GNW, it is like having a high of 50 predicted for tomorrow, then a high of 100 by Sunday.
I like snow, and I like spring, but going back and forth is getting really hard on my butt when I keep slipping on the ice sheet left from the spring-thaw freezing rain!

Re: Crazy weather
We had a high of 73 today. Pretty amazing for January. Tomorrow is supposed to be 53. Sigh. I did get a little spring weeding done, just because I could. I also planted 58 winter sown containers outdoors, so my kitchen is still clean. A good day was had by all.
