The Cubic Foot Plant Starter

Just yesterday I started some tomato seeds in some peat pots and was looking for some kind of tray that they would fit in to keep from handeilng the pots once they were wet. Then I found an empty milk crate in my garage and to my surprise 16 peat pots will fit perfectly in the bottom of a milk crate. Then I realized that the crate would be easy to move until plants were ready to transplant and that you could stack the milk crates on top of each other inside the house temporarily when the weather was to cold, taking up almost no space. The height of the milk crate gives plenty of head space for your seedling's and also will act as a wind break when placed outdoors.

What a great idea! I was trying to move my seedlings around last year in the flimsy plastic tray. I will definitely consider doing this!

What a great idea, I never would have thought about it but I can get lots of milk crates at work! Thanks for sharing!

That's a great idea. I have so many that I use as stack able table legs. But your idea is a much better use for them. Very Happy

If you are handy with a saw you can cut the bottoms out, then cut one side out saving that side. Plant potatoes, stacking and filling with straw as the vines come up. You tie with string, wire or cable ties the side back on each crate. Then when you want potatoes just undo one side, pull a few and put back together.
Recycle, recycle, recycle.
They also make great hanging strawberry baskets.
