What to do with the MM in pots Empty What to do with the MM in pots

Post  GWN 1/25/2013, 5:56 pm

I had about 15 tomato plants in 5 gallon buckets last year in MM. They were in the greenhouse most of the year and I kept them into the fall, right up until december, then I turned down the heat.
What does everyone do with the large pots full of MM? DO you just add compost, or do you dump them and start over.
I have put mine into compost since they have been indoors for so long and I was worried about disease, but curious about what others do, and what about pots left outside?
thanks

I usually add it to either the beds with MM that have settled or put it in the compost pile.

Hi Ladies... I was under the impression that we could re-use the MM several times by adding compost and doing some crop rotation. Is this not correct? The peat and vermiculite both seem like sterile products. Although I'm gardening for health and fun, the MM can get expensive and I hoped to use it for at least a few years. Is this a bad idea? Sad

Mel's mix will last a long time when you keep adding compost. You really only make the Mel's mix for starting out your gardens 'with a practically perfect growing mix' (I'm paraphrasing Mel there). There is no reason to replace it.

For those of us in the north, where everything freezes, it is often wise of me to empty all my pots at the end of the season. I will fill up my beds with the potted MM, but sometimes if I have leftovers, I put the little that's left into the compost pile. In reality it goes into the garden next season.

Does that make more sense? Very Happy

Jackie
I was just talking about pots.
and really it all stays in the system.
I think just taking everything out of the pot and letting it air for awhile, and then putting it back

I store my pots of soil in the barn or in the greenhouse. I empty them in the spring to get old roots or thick plant trunks out and refill pots and add more compost after I fill the containers again. Sometimes I store the used soil in a clean trash can for the winter and save for spring.

Even somewhere like here where there is no "off season" I find that eventually the holes at the bottom of the pots get clogged up and I have to dump out the Mel's Mix into boxes that have settled and start fresh.

I've been using the old spent tomato , capsicum and aubergene tubs of MM and splitting it up in a big tray , removing any big roots , then crumbled some of my own home made 1yr old ten element dung based compost over it all.
Turned it in several times and rubbed it out on a board to get it fine mixed , now I've used it as potting medium in 6 inch pots for my 14 Lollo Rosso lettuces , 3 lemon grass sticks out the supermarket ( part rooted in a glass of water ). 10 collards and 2 Goji Berry shrubs . Gave them a warm rain water drink once it was all done.

Once it gets a bit warmer they will get hardened off and be left to grow outside in pots till the end of may and then in a bed some where if I still have enough space.
I hope this timing will give a few days clear for me to clean sterilize the glasshouse again before I start growing on the main batch of seasonal plants .
These aren't even started yet but will be in the seed UV propagation heated bed about 10 days time .

The remaining spent compost will be spread over three crowns of rhubarb which are in mother earth with a bit more of my own compost .
