Out of MM - What to use in pots now?
Everyone,
I am currently out of my MM and have about 14 leftover plants (toms, peppers, cantaloupe, okra) that I am going to put in containers. What do you recommend for soil in substitute for MM?
Thanks,
York

I used unfinished compost 1 year for tomatoes when I ran out of MM and they loved it! I use finished compost in all my pots to this day . The potted banana peppers go...well, bananas.

I have a bag of composted Bark fines and maybe even some cotton bur compost but wasn't sure if it would work since I don't have 5 different kinds. Also, even have some leftover peat and vermiculite. So maybe the 2 kinds would be okay for pots.

I don't know anything about bagged compost. I guess you could try it unless someone else chimes in and says no.

I only had 2 last year and things did fine. 5 is better, but 2 is 2, ya know?

Can you add some bagged composted manure with the other bags of compost? Whether in the SFG box or in a container, the closer to MM, the better.
Re: Out of MM - What to use in pots now?
The one thing about both bagged composts and bagged manures to be aware of is that virtually all, even the best certified-for-organic-gardening etc. contain a fair amount of peat. Not necessarily a bad thing but something to take into account if you are paying attention to ratios etc.

Re: Out of MM - What to use in pots now?
I had to rely on bagged composts for my current batch of MM, and I didn't even add any peat. Because the composts were already peat heavy. I mean it is the first ingredient on 3 of the bags I Bought! So we. Will see. I didn't know that last year when I made my first boxes....good thing I amended with blood and bone meals. I only did that because I had 6 inches of leaves under the MM that I thought needed a catalyst....they are 12 inches deep.
