Which seeds would YOU like to see?

HELP!

I'm trying to pick about 20-30 varieties of non-GMO seeds in "per square" quantities for my online store and I am OVERWHELMED! I want to get them ALL, but that's not practical.

Below are the varieties available to me in bulk. PLEASE help me by choosing 20 or so varieties. I won't be selling exclusively to those who use the SFG method, but if you know if any of these ARE particularly good for small-space gardening, please let me know.

Also if you know that they are EASY to grow, indicate that too, and feel free to add any notes you'd like. LOL about the only information I DON'T want, is MORE choices.

Collard Greens, Champion - Vates variety is my personal favorite. Have grown them for at least 30 years

Cucumber, Lemon - space saver did well in my squares.

Kale, Red Russian - winterbor is a taller kale and stands up well. After it gets tall and you have cropped off the lower leaves, you can underplant lettuce or radish around the stalks.


Pea, Progress #9 - what, no snap peas. I did well with sugar snap

Yes! I have a list of minimum germination rates of various veggies and will be quite generous with the number of seeds I include. For instance with carrots, they are 16 per square foot. With a 55% germination rate I'll probably include 4 seeds per hole which will be 64 seeds.

Hi Kim, glad to see that you are going to do this! My answer may not be what you want. Since I live in the south, most of the different varieties will grow, so I looked at what I have plenty of left over from last yr.

All of these are always packed too many to the pack:

Tomatoes
Peppers, hot and sweet
cabbage
cauliflower
broccoli
collards
squash
melons, except for watermelon
most beans even have way too many in each pack.

veggies that can be succession planted need to have several planting in each pack.
carrots
beets
lettuce
greens
spinach


Since we all have our favorites, have you thought of doing a favorites variety packs?
Ex: lettuce, 3 kinds for the price of 1 full pack. I love Tom Thumb, and Little gems.


I love growing/eating veggies. So, I ordered too many seed packs. I probably have enough seeds left over from last yr. to plant many gardens. And, I've already got some different varieties that I want to try this yr, so will order more!
I think smaller packs of everything would be the way to go.

The "beauty" of this is that you CAN do succession planting and order seeds elsewhere if you think you'll go through a whole packet of seeds in a few years, but use my site if you don't want to spend $3/$4/$5 a packet to TRY different things. Remember, on this Forum we are, for the most part, seasoned SFGers.

My site will MOSTLY be geared toward the beginning gardeners, so I am hoping to get thoughts on what y'all have had success (and failure) with in your SFGs. Let's face it, there are plenty of people even here who are beginner SFGers who are unsure of their actions and sometimes afraid to try.

LOL many of my students wish I would build their beds, fill them with my growing medium, put the grid on, give them a planting plan (if not plant for them), water, protect, harvest & cook for them.

I teach them how to PLAN their gardens . . . How many head of broccoli will you want your garden to produce this year? How many carrots do you want? Etc. You only have containers? . . . Here are the most costly veggies/herbs per square foot and you can supplement the less costly veggies from the store.

BTW you have me a LOT to think about so thank you very much for posting.

I like the idea of small beginners packets of seed , but it may not be a sound financial venture for you .

I'd hate to have them though , for I have many beds , I'd even grow lettuce etc. just to put in the compost heap if I had a surfit of old seeds close to the expiry date that I have decided upon .
( check out percieved viability & storage of seeds in good conditions and set your times accordingly .)

Lets face it most decent seed outlets do give you good value for money .. those that are putting in the pack a fraction of what they were two years ago and still raising the prices are soon likely to be out of business as word gets around .

IE .
Two year ago average content of carrot seed Early Nantees was 1500 seeds for £1.50 .
From the same supplier this year , exactly the same seed was 100 seeds for £2.30 , nice money if you can find enough suckers to buy it .

Kim, you must be a good teacher, if they like you well enough to 'wish' you could do it all and still pay you!

Where can we look to buy from you when you get ready? I think I've found something to do with some of these old seeds.

Couldn't see the brochure at all because I don't have Microsoft Word. That might thwart many potential buyers.

It states to click on 'seeds' to see the seed list but there is no such thing anywhere that I could find.
Is this because you aren't ready to sell yet? or is it my old age?

hhhmmm Intuit gave me brand new software but I guess I'll be on the phone with their Help Desk because it looks OK on my computer. gggrrr

I will try to get more container varieties but this is hard(er) to do with heirloom seeds which I'm focusing on at the moment.

BTW, do you see where it says "Arugula" in the Seeds area? If so, the complete list is in the drop-down menu. (I hope that's just the problem because I can just add a text box.)

Yes, there is a drop down box next to the word Arugula. When you click the arrow beside the box, a list of differnt types of seeds appears. But based on other comments on your website, I expected to see more of a description of the attributes of the various seeds. Maybe I interpreted that incorrectly. I expected to find a "seeds page" describing the various seed varieties.

I do think this is a good idea though. I like to experiment to find what grows well in my area and buying a whole pack of seeds is wastefull when I am only going to plant one or two of a variety. Then if it turns out I do not like the way the plant grows in my area or do not like the taste, I end up throwing the packet away.

Because there is a $5 minimum on orders, shipping is free. I just noticed that changing over to the new system has wiped out many some of my other items - I was just focused on the seeds.
