New to SFG and need ideas?

This is the area I have to work with..So looking for ideas and pictures to help out in the planning stage.

Also looking for places to buy open-pollinated, non-hybrid, non-GMO seeds.

It's always good to start planning around sun orienataion...where is north in your photo?

what i did when i moved my garden from one location to another is i took a bunch of wooden stakes and flags. during sunny days, during peak hours (and of course keep in mind winter sunlight angle is different than summer) is mark with flags wehre the sun hit the ground.

i did this for about 2 weeks til i had a nice perimeter marked out.

i noticed you have trees. i do too, which makes it more challenging to get an accurate 'sunny always' spot. but the method i described to you worked well for me.

i moved my boxes to the absolute center and northern most area i could in that marked perimeter. then added on to those boxes when spring/summer came to expand.

might be a way to get working in the garden even before you have lots of warm sunlight to grow in.

i had enough 'nice' days in the winter to move and mix up mel's mix.

ooh, something i did keep in mind was the width of my lawn mower - i put the boxes in such a way that my lawn mower still fit perfectly +18 inches so i didn't have to get creative with mowing around - my back yard is similar in style to yours - very large with lots of grass.


that reminds me - i mowed my yard as low to the ground as i could and i put the 'expensive' landscape fabric down (i didn't bother removing the grass). worked out well for me with that method. i have 20 boxes (4x4) in a straight line. only downside to that is i have to walk around to the north/south side, but i love it that way.

perhaps that gives you ideas.
