I got a bit of a surprise today while digging around for the last of the sweet potatoes/ getting ready for collards. This reminded me that even though our SFG beds are raised, they still are attractive to all sorts of critters !

AWWWW, a baby snake, good for keeping the vermin down in the garden, once it gets bigger. Snakes are such awesome creatures. Lucky you! cheers

Is it one of these? a scarlet snake?

Umm...that's a King Snake...a good guy; not venomous in the least & awesome that you put him back.

That being said, his look-a-like, the Coral Snake is a VERY dangerous critter. Important to the ecosystem, & not to be killed-just-cuz-its-a-snake but not to be handled lightly.

Here's a link on how to tell them apart, but I just always remember: red & yellow kill a fellow, red & black you're all right Jack.

I almost stepped on a Coral snake as a child growing up in Miami, Florida. Not something you forget & important to know how to tell them apart if you're poking around the vegetation in the Sunshine State.

I don't want to frighten you or cause undue alarm; just something I thought you should be aware of.

Thanks for the heads up about the coral snake, I learned early on the rhyme "Red on Yellow kill a fellow, Red on Black good for Jack".... right along with the instructions never to touch a snake... Laughing

LOL! I think I missed that lesson, too.

Well, I'm glad you knew the difference when you picked that little critter up because my heart skipped a beat when I saw your picture. It's such an ingrained reaction even from so many years ago...just like ducking for cover when you hear the raspy sound of a palmetto bug's wings just as you're about to get dive-bombed...
