I was checking my purple sweet potatoes to see if they were close to harvest size and found this beauty, weighing 2 pounds and 10 ounces.

Wow! Very Happy I haven't had any luck with potatoes either of the times I tried to grow them. I didn't know there was such a thing as a purple sweet potato!

WOW the vine must have been something to see too!
Yours is a lot bigger than the one we have, ours was 1 lb 11 ounces and I thought it was big. Yours is definitely a whooper! cheers

Here's ours it's not a purple but a ornamental lime green.

Wow. Some sweet potatoes. I also picked my first one and it was good for a couple of meals. I really need to get a food scale!

Janefss and Theresa, you both have great sweet potatoes. way to go
Unfortunately, that is one thing the County Extension Office says will NOT grow on the Oregon Coast.

This guy really surprised me. I harvested my Beauregards a couple of weeks ago and got about 6 large (like you see in the grocery store) a few medium medium and several small ones just right for roasting.

Theresa, the size of yours was a goal for me! I still have the Vardaman and Porto Ricos to go, so I'll see if they are more "normal" in size like the Beauregards.

Furbalsmom, that is too bad that you can't grow them where you are. Is it too moist for them there?

Even though the Oregon Coast has a long growing season, 190-250 days, we have a cool growing season. We suffer from wind, fog and heavy spring rains along with the lack of heat. The only way we can grow sweet potatoes, melons, lima beans, eggplant, okra, watermelons and other long season heat loving plants, is if we are able to provide almost greenhouse conditions.
I may try to make wagonwheel covers for one or more of my SFG table tops 'cause I really would love to have eggplant, lima beans and cantalope. Course I would love to grow everything.

Furbalsmom,
Go for it! I call that "experiment!". No loss if not successful, just gain of knowledge if it doesn't work and good stuff if successful!

Be careful in your selection of Lima Beans. I'm growing a Pole variety now and they are taking over the world! I hope to take pictures to post tomorrow when I get the afternoon off ( I had to work Sunday). So probably you would want to use a Bush variety. My eggplant is now finally happy after the hot and dry summer here and is starting to produce.

I'm also searching out beans and squash adapted to heat and drought (found Native Seeds website http://www.nativeseeds.org). Maybe you can find varieties somewhat adapted to growing conditions like yours from other vendors.

Your idea sounds like a good adaption to your beds to grow the stuff not perfectly happy with your weather.
