Compost question
I am a beginner at composting, getting ready to start my first pile. As far as adding manure to my pile, does it need to be "fresh" manure?

Re: Compost question
If you can get it, it's good stuff to add to the pile of greens and browns.TexasTracy wrote:I am a beginner at composting, getting ready to start my first pile. As far as adding manure to my pile, does it need to be "fresh" manure?

Re: Compost question
What I have access to is a little bit older manure, will that still be a good source for my nitrogen or does it need to be fresh manure?

Re: Compost question
In my opinion it would be a useful addition in any case. If it is already totally composted it will not add enough nitrogen to get the compost hot. You may have to use another nitrogen source for that.

Re: Compost question
Tracy add as much as you can get & mix it in , damping it down as you go , it is after all a form of useful compost . It will contain gazzillions of bacteria that your heap will use & contains uric acid that will provide nitrogen for the bacteria & fungi that do the breaking down of plant fibres .
As ever make sure you are upto date with your tenanus shots for this will be come what is known as a live bacteria compost .

Just got my booster in July before heading to Kenya. But it is a good reminder for all of us gardeners.
