Mid-Atlantic: October - What's Up?

Our radishes are doing pretty good. We still have some red peppers too that are finishing up. What about you?

My peppers are finishing up and my fall garden is planted and growing well. 3 lettuces, radish, kale, onion, garlic, peas, carrots. Starting to cut some lettuce now for salads. YUM!

Our lettuce only took part way. Even our green beans are still producing but I'm sure after this cool weather we will be getting in the next day to two may be it for them.

I shut my garden down in Mid-September. I have seeded two of my plots with winter rye in late September and that is coming up nicely. I seeded in two additional plots this past Friday. My plants were less than productive this summer so I did some research and found out that winter rye was a good cover crop to reinvigorate your soil. I have also stepped up my compost production and have started a composter with leaves in hopes of getting leaf mold for the early spring.
I emptied two of my rain barrels this afternoon so I am basically almost shut down for the year. It wasn't great but that won't deter me from working hard for next year. I scored some really great gardening stuff at a place called Tuesday Morning about a month ago.
I got 10 ea 6ft bamboo poles covered in plastic and 10 ea 4ft bamboo poles for $4.00 a bundle. Then I bought an 8ft Maypole for beans and peas for $11.00. Then I bought 8 roles of spun fabric (10X25') for $3.00 each. I couldn't resist the pricing as the fabric alone was at least half price. I will be using the fabric to shade my plants as this past year was very hot and the plants just didn't seem to want to produce.
All in all, I am ahead of my planning for next year. Just hoping all my work will pay off next year. I have more research to do on how to combat the heat. Several of my neighborhood gardener friends also noticed things were off and I truly believe it was the heat. I have to figure out a way to get water onto the gardens easier. I will presevere, that is for sure.

Yes, it was a very hot summer.
My pole beans are still producing along with my peppers and tomatoes.
I started my fall garden with 3 kinds of lettuce, carrots, peas, spinach, beets, and bush beans.
This week I will be planting my garlic once it stops raining!

Bakermtb - The Zinnias are awesome! I never have any luck with Zinnias.

I just pulled out my pole beans from the garden along with my tomato plants. I still have my pepper plants in the garden.
My fall garden has carrots, peas, spinach, beets and 3 kinds of lettuce. I just hope the very cold weather holds off so I can enjoy veg's. This past weekend I just planted two kinds of garlic.
